Chattanooga CNA certification

U.S.A. Tennessee

Hi, I'm new to this site and have read some of the posts regaurding CNAs in TN. I'm currently working full time and taking night classes at a local college, hoping to enter the RN program by fall 2008. But instead of what I am currently doing, I've thought about becomming a CNA so I'd at least be working in the medical field if my plans fall through.

I found the link to the TN dept of health and found the nursing aide training facilities. But is this the same thing as a CNA course? Does anyone know of any hospitals offering CNA classes? There were some ads in the paper for some classes starting in January but I don't know how reputable those companies are since they are not affiliated with any facility that I know of. Anything anyone could tell me would be helpful. Thank you!

The only hospital in my area that will train CNA's is the VA hospital. Otherwise, there are some nursing homes that will do the training, and there are a few schools.

Beware of places like Concorde Career Institute. They will sell you a 6 or 9 month "Patient Care Assistant" course, which is essentially a glorified CNA course that costs about $6,000.

Just for comparison, the school that I got my LPN training from also has a CNA course. It's 5 weeks long and costs $550.

If you're looking to get your feet wet and will eventually go on to be a nurse, I would recommend trying to get a job at a hospital as some kind of tech where they will do OJT. I think you will get more relevant experience as a telemetry tech than as a CNA. But then again, some hospitals require you to have a CNA cert before you can be trained as a tech, so you may have to get your CNA anyway.

I got mine at NHC Smithville (hour or so from you)- check with NHC nursing homes in Chattanooga, usually free except for cost of books, certification fees

There are nursing homes in the Chattanooga area that will provide free CNA training in exchange for a committment of work from the student.

Chattanooga State has CNA classes as well. None of the local hospitals provide these classes, so look for an reputable school to attend.

Good luck to you!

Hello All,

I am a 59 y.o. male who has decided to try CNA since I have been taking care of my 88 y.o. Father-n-Law for the past 3 1/2 months.

Strange how life deals the cards sometimes, I was let go from my last job just as my wife, who had been looking after her dad, got a new job. So we switched rolls. Got Amedisys coming in about three times a week for P.Ther. and check-ups.

Got to go back to work and jobs are scarce, but lots of jobs for CNA in classifieds. Trying to get in to a FREE training class or will have to bite the bullet and take a 2 week fast-track school for around $450. plus the required other.

1) Which First Aid, CPR/AED course is the right one for CNA's to take?

2) Anyone in Chattanooga area(or Rhea County) know of Free Training Ops?

Thanks!

I live across the state line and I would like to apply for work in a Chattanooga hosapital or ALF. How can I go about doing that so that I do not have to try & fail (AGAIN) on the TN. skills exam? Your input will be so much in appreciation to tell me where it is allowed for me to work at in Chattanooga while being certified in Georgia . I was told by a nurse @ Erlanger when I interviewed for a position that it is not a manditory thing for Eranger since it is just across the state line. I would like to apply @ Memorial & the HCA Columbia hospitals in Chattanooga as well.:nurse:
