Vandy-ASN & BSN?

by TNMommy

I heard that Vandy is not hiring nurses with just an associates degree anymore since they became a magnet hospital. Is this true? I would think that they would accept ASN and BSN considering the shortage.

Any thoughts?

I would say that this is not true because if you go to their career website, the job description just says that the RN positions requires graduation from an approved program of professional nursing (RN) and current TN RN license. If you look at some of their other job openings like NP they specifically state that you need a masters degree. For their accounting senior postion, it specifically states that you have to have a bachelors degree. I really don't see where having a BSN would make any difference, after all an RN and a BSN nurse can do the same things. One sure way to find out though is to contact someone in Vandy's Human Resources Department.

I agree. I am currently getting my CNA from NHC and was told by NATS that Vandy will not hire from any other program than theirs. I then called Vandy and they told me that it does not matter as long as I am certified or have graduated from a CNA course. I think people make things up just for fun or in NATS case for money. I am sure that the rumor of them not hiring any nurses accept the ones with BSN's is also not true.

Do you know if NHC offers any classes in the evenings? How much does it cost to take the CNA class with them?

It must just be a rumor because I was just offered a position there and I will have an ADN from another state. It must be a marketing ploy.

NHC does not have evening classes. At least this one doesn't. I am in Hendersonville, which is just outside of Nashville (I don't know if you are from this area). The cost is free. You just have to pay for your book which is $45. The course is 3 weeks and is from 8:30-4:30 M-F. They also hire from the classes. I have to say that this is the cleanest facility. They are a 5 star LTC facility. I highly recommend them.

If you have any more questions, let me know!

Thanks TNMommy. I'm in Murfreesboro. I know we have an NHC here as well. I'm going to try and contact them tomorrow. I would love to be able to take that class. If I get accepted to LPN school, I will have to quit my full time job. Maybe if I can become a CNA, I can work some weekend hours while in LPN school for spending money.

You can look on the tennessee health department website to find the nursing assistant training facilities for your area. There is a link on the side that I believe says nursing assistant training or training course. I'm not sure.

I just applied to a med/surg floor at Vandy. I currently live in SC and would love to move to the Nashville area.
I hate to ask but does anyone have any advice or suggestions for getting hired on at Vandy?

I have 6 mos experience at a level 1 trauma ER and an ASN.
Thanks!
