Vanderbilt Interenships

Does anyone have any info on new grad internships at Vanderbilt? I would really like to get into one of these internships. Also does anyone know how much they pay and if they offer a sign on bonus? I have a lot of student loan debt.

They are beginning to accept applications on August 3rd for the January program. You will need to call HR and get an application packet, you can do a search on the internet for Vanderbilt Internship Program and it will give you the information for the person you need to contact. I am not 100% on salary, but I believe it is around $17 per hour plus shift diff., there are no sign on bonuses that I am aware of. I am a May grad who applied for the internship that is to begin in July, I applied for Women's Health but that track was cut due to the economy. They did not select as many people this time around because of financial issues and the majority of the people that were chosen were current employees. That doesn't mean though that things won't be different for this group! My understanding is that they typically choose several people especially for the med-surg tracks, I do know that the pediatric track is more competitive. Well, good luck to you and I hope this has helped!!

$17 per hour? That is the worse nurse pay (new grad or not) I have heard of for the entire country. Are you sure about that? With the cost of living in Nashville, that seems extremely low. It would have to be over $20 just to be competitive.

I know it is really low, but it is $17 "something" plus shift differentials, or this is what we were told in April, I am confirming it as we speak with a friend who was hired on for peds. You have to remember that Vandy is a teaching hospital, so although their pay is lower, the experience you can gain from being there is invaluable. And I really don't understand why the hospitals pay so much less here than in other areas, especially when you consider the cost of living. I completely understand what you're saying, I am from Dallas and was shocked when I found out how much I could expect to make as a new nurse here in Nashville compared to Dallas. Dallas' starting pay is $23-24 plus shift diff. and here in Nashville there is no place that I have heard of that is over $19 starting (please if anyone knows different, let me know! ). I also don't want you to think I am just speaking through hear say, I have actively been looking for a job here and have talked with Vandy, Centennial and Baptist. Anyway, I hope this helps and when I get the exact rate from my fellow classmate I will post it for you! Have a great rest of your weekend!

Thank you for the info. I really do appreciate it. I really wanted to work at Vandy because it is a great hospial, but I also have a huge amount of student loans to pay back and that pay may not work for me. I was also considering Dallas. I know a nurse who worked at Baylor and loved it. What do you think of Dallas? Is it a good place to be a nurse? I am from Las Vegas and this is a terrible place to work as a nurse, so I don't want to stay here. Our healthcare is 49th in the country.

Hey! No problem at all, and I just heard back from my buddy, she said when they extended the formal offers the pay was raised to $19 per hour plus differentials! So that is definitely better than the original $17. I think Dallas is great, but I grew up there so I am partial ! I grew up in the suburbs around there, I particularly like North Dallas. I have family that works for HCA in Lewisville and North Richland Hills and they are both very happy. I grew up in Flower Mound and Lewisville. There are so many facilities in that area though, you could work anywhere. Parkland is another great teaching facility, people go to work there from all over, kind of like Vandy, but not so much in the Peds area. But there are fantastic pediatric hospitals there as well if that is your interest. There is also tons to do there! I just love it and am hoping that we will be returning in the not too distant future! Let me know if I can do anything to help, okay?

I am an experienced RN working at Vandy, and $17 to start is pretty accurate. Although the pay tends to be lower (I took a $5 paycut to work there), the benefits package, advancement, continuing ed, and overall work environment do make up for it.

Hi! I applied for the nurse residency program in Vanderbilt and I'm wondering about the cost of living in Nashville (I am currently in Washington). I have an interview for the pediatric track next week, I hope they hire me but I also have some student loans I need to pay off so I'm worried if I'll be able to afford living there and paying off my loans. Does anyone know if Vanderbilt helps pay off student loans? Also if anyone could give me information about the cost of living in Nashville I would really appreciate it.

Vanderbilt offers no sign-on bonuses, no help for student loans. Their pay isn't great cause "It's Vanderbilt" and you should be honored that they let you work there.
