Nurse Techs/Interns/Externs do not receive benefits because they are PRN employees. There are no guaranteed hours either.

I will second that. At the hospitals I know (Methodist, St. Francis, Med) you cannot get benefits as a nurse tech. It is a PRN position, and thus not eligable for full- or part-time benefits. If you are interested in working while in nursing school and recieving benefits you might consider applying for nursing assistant/patient care assistant positions. You would be able to get benefits at part-time status, depending on the hospital system and how many hours you consistently work per week. Good luck!
