I need some Nashville RN info!!!

Hello everyone,

I live in California and just graduated as an RN with my Associates a few months ago. My wife and I are thinking of possibly moving to Nashville in a few months....I lived there for a little less than a year a while back and really loved it. I was wondering if any of you RN's could tell me how much you make, in what nursing area, and how many years experience. I would especially appreciate any information you could give me regarding the market for new grad RN's. Out here in San Diego new grad RN's start right around $25/hr and the opportunities are boundless, especially for new grads and any retired nurses wanting to get back into nursing. There are soooo many training programs that cater to those just starting their careers out here. What's it like in Nashville? I've done the research regarding housing information so I know that the rent I'd pay would be much cheaper than out here, but I'm having a hard time finding out about salary info/new grad programs for RN's. Any information you could give me would be much appreciated. Thanks!!!!

Tommy

I'm looking into the Nashville area myself.

If you are in CA, though, I would stay there if you like it okay. Lots more opportunities.

I work in a suburban hospital. I was an LPN for 25 years and have been an RN for 3 years. I work days on Med/Surg and make $25.78 an hour. We recently had an RN from California join us. Good Luck!

Vandy starts its new grads out at around 17.50/hr and then there's a critical care diff. if you go that route. I have heard that other hospitals in the area pay a little more, but pay in the south in general is a lot less than in California....even Atlanta starts new grads out at around 21 (And that's prob. the highest in the south as I recall when i graduated almost 2 yrs ago and was looking around). Vanderbilt's new grad program for anything in peds and the critical care units is 6 mo of classroom and unit based experience and its wonderful. You have to apply specifically through this program and they start it twice a yr. There are a limited number of spots. In the adult realm, you can go straight to most floors without going through the program.

I worked at Vandy when I lived in the area. I can't speak to the wages but the experience you gain at this teaching hospital will open doors for you down the road. The things I saw in my first year after graduation were things that other nurses (with whom I was working) had never seen before.

Of course, the one problem I've encountered since my Vandy days is the assumption that "You worked at Vanderbilt? Oh, you can handle anything!" Not a good thing if you're in a new hospital trying to learn new skills & management is trying to shortchange you on your orientation.
