Considering moving to Elizabethton

by mtngrl

I currently live at the beach in SC, but my husband and I have planned for the past 5 years to move to the mountains when I was out of school. That got delayed a year due to his deployment to Iraq, but he will be home next month. We are seriously considering eastern TN, and I have researched a lot of hospitals and so far Sycamore Shoals sounds the most appealing to me. Does anyone have any info on that hospital and the area? We prefer small towns that are near a larger city, so Elizabethton sounds perfect. I also like small hospitals. JCMC is wayyy too big for me! I know the pay probably won't be much, but it's the work environment that I care about more. Also, their website said 6pm-6am shifts instead of the usual 7-7. Is this true? I like 6-6 better so that would be a plus.

Hmmm.. didn't know that 'cause have yet to actually visit E-town in person. But my hubbie and I plan on taking some time in June visiting different cities in eastern TN so we know where to look for jobs at. We really don't care where we live as long as it's in the mountains. Is Rogersville such a place? We really do not like living at the beach, we have been here since '97 and it gets more crowded each year, too much traffic, too hot, unfriendly people, you name it. We were first considering NC mountains but it's just too expensive there. Thanks for the input.

Yes, I am also considering Sevierville. I've heard of Kingsport, but it may be a bit too northward for me. Do you work in a hospital? This summer I am going to visit TN and all the cities I am interested in, to see if they look as good in person. Do you know anything about Johnson City? We ideally want to move to a smallish town without a lot of traffic. I have only been to Gatlinburg and Cosby in TN.

yes, i work for the big hospital in johnson city's little counterpart. i know quite a bit about johnson city, i went to nursing school there and go there to shop occasionally. it is a rather large town, the college and medical school are there. sevierville is right outside gatlinburg/pigeon forge. it is definately close to the mountains, you are only a stone's throw from the smoky mountain national park there. incidentally i just got back from your neck of the woods a couple of weeks ago, we go to myrtle beach to vacation

Hi Mtngrl,
Just from my few visits I do think there is a lot of traffic problems in and around Sieverville. We have gone there for vacations(we like to stay in our mountains too) and the traffic was awful. I know a nurse who moved to Johnson City, and loved it, but hubby would not stay. Bigger than you say you want but I bet there are many places close by. Good hunting.

Is it true as mentioned in a previous post that Elizabethton smells??? I really am interested in the hospital there. I think the ones in Johnson City are too big.

haha. i really don't know if it smells or not to tell you the truth.i haven't been thru there a lot to notice. another thought that came to mind is jonesboro. very historic town, right outside johnson city. it would be within driving distance to all the same hospitals.also if you want to go on past kingsport- church hill, rogersville and surgoinsville come to mind. all smaller, more rural, and still accessible to the larger cities.
