Clarksville area hospitals, Military Included

by Cay

Family is moving to Clarksville, Tn area. My questions are: What are good areas to live in, in and out of City? Requesting area hospital information, military included, and knowledge readers have about pay, working conditions and anything others care to share. Reccomendations about travel companies that focus on the area. Areas of interest and what to do for entertainment?
Thanks,
Cay

I just left Ft.Campbell/Clarksville March '08 after being there 10yrs. DH was active duty and we've relocated.

The fastest growing area is Tiny Town Rd/Northeast High area. Lots of military all over. I, personally, wasn't too crazy about downtown, Riverside. New Providence/New Providence end of Peachers Mill Rd. is definitely a place to avoid (drugs, prostitution, etc). They're trying to clean that area up...but I wouldn't live there. Peachers Mill Rd. between 101st Parkway and Tiny Town Rd. have a lot of new, really nice homes recently built. Further south...Warfield Blvd., Sango area also have nice subdivisions. The better schools (if you have kids) IMO are in the zone for NE high school. Out of the city....depends on how far out. You're pretty much in the middle of nowhere as it is. The closest metro city is Nashville...45-52mi away. I wouldn't live in Hopkinsville, KY, 10mi from Ft.Campbell. I prefer closer to city but that's me. There are several small towns between Clarksville and Nashville....Pleasant View, Ashland City, Springfield, and Joelton (a little closer to Nashville).

Hospitals....ok...Jenny Stuart in Hopkinsville..a decent sized hospital...Gateway has a brand new hospital close to I-24 near Exit 4 (not sure if they've added a new exit or not to accomodate), not sure what they did/are doing with the old hospital on Madison St., and Blanchfield Army Community Hospital on base. Many more opportunities in Nashville if you're willing to commute...Vanderbilt University Hospital, Vanderbilt Children's (not sure if it's separate structures or not), Baptist Hospital, Centennial Med. Center, St. Thomas, Nashville General. Most of the nurses that I knew commuted. Trauma in Clarksville gets medivac-ed to Nashville. Even military.

Clarksville has a med. sized mall, Governor's Square Mall. Movie theatre at Tiny Town Rd. @ Trenton Rd. Great Escape it's called. The only NICE movie theatre in town other than the mall....so it's bursting at the seams with teenagers. Austin Peay State University is there as well so there's a small amt. of college kids. Nashville is the closest big source of entertainment....several LARGE malls in and around the city, Opry Mills Mall, definitely take the time to do a tour of the Opryland Hotel (right next door to Opry Mills), a waterpark, downtown Nashville is nice to go to if you've never been, country music hall of fame (none of that appealed to me...not a CM fan). Louisville, KY is only a few hours away and we took the kids to Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom. In Bowling Green, KY the Corvette museum is there and I'm sure there's much more that we missed. Didn't do very many things that were costly, besides the cost of gas/food.

Working conditions, pay, etc. is something that I won't be able to help you with. Sorry. Only thing I can say is that several of the nurses I knew (incl. my best friend's mom who's an LPN) worked out of Nashville. They refused to work at Gateway. Now this was before they built the new hospital which just opened last summer. I 'heard' they now have a union, but don't quote me on that, since I'm not physically there, just word-of-mouth stuff. I'm sure that someone may know more about pay and stuff and if I'm wrong on the union thing, I'll stand corrected.

Hope that I've helped you some! Good luck!

You're certainly welcome! Sorry I couldn't help as far as wages go. Looking at your specialty, there's also Western Kentucky State Hospital (mental facility). Did a field trip there w/my Abnormal Psych. class. VERY interesting to say the least. Good luck on your move!!
