Baptist College of Health Science: Cost of First Semester Nursing Books

I saw in the general NS forum a thread on first semester nursing books. I'd like to get some information on the cost of nursing books for Baptist College here in Memphis.

Are there any former or current Baptist nursing students on here that could give the students getting ready to start clinicals a heads up?

I haven't started my clinicals, but I've heard that you have to buy a drug reference book for about $70, & all you need is any drug reference book so you can look up meds. Amazon has The Pill Book for about $8 that I've HEARD is good enough, but again, I haven't started clinicals!

You should probably just contact the school directly and ask them the cost of the books that you will need. Unfortunately, nursing textbooks are very expensive. I spent $800 for my first semester books (not at Baptist, but another Memphis school), and probably an additional $250 each following semester. Each school is very particular about the books you will use, and it would probably be best to get the same books as the rest of your class so that you don't have problems finding the reading assignments or accessing information.

I DO recommend, however, trying to find the books cheaper using online sources. Try to get your booklist early and compare (using ISBN numbers!) to find the best price. I usually use barnesandnoble.com because I have a 10% discount and 2-day shipping is free for textbooks. Others use amazon.com, half.com, and textbooks.com. Be sure to look at shipping options, though, because sometimes the books are cheap but they take 2 weeks to arrive!!

Good luck!

I'm also a member of barnes and noble, amazon.com, alibris.com. Ebay is also another good place to find used textbooks.

But i'll do what you suggest, see about getting the checklist for my first semester nursing books and see if I can find them cheaper by the ISBN numbers. But Baptist kinda has us by the forelock when it comes to getting books. Any money left over from your student loans is automatically put into a student account to be used in the bookstore. At first they issued bookchecks. Now they've changed it to a student account that you can use to purchase your books from the bookstore. Any money left after that is given to the student.

So, be warned, if you buy books online they will come out of your own pocket. But I did it with some of my Spring trimester books, got them cheaper online.
