Anyone here use WIA to help cover tuition?

by LBS2008

I'm set to begin LPN school this fall and did receive some financial aid.

I have a shortage that may be covered by WIA. Just curious to hear from anyone experienced with this program.

It is quite intense for such a small amount of FA.

I am currently receiving the WIA grant which covers my whole program: tuition, books, supplies, uniforms, and NCLEX fee. I has truly come in handy as I am unemployed and my husband is on workman's comp. The process was very quick and painless. I'm in Texas not Tennessee, but I believe the program and process is the same across the nation.

Thanks so much! It sounds like a great program, but it came across as the opposite of quick and painless.

Did you have to test and all of that? They told me to prepare for a 3-4 hour test on math, reading and language. And what about the 6 month to one year of job monitoring after you graduate?

Thanks, again!

I worked for the WIA program for several years..... did you have any specific questions? The WIA program is basically set up to help people return to work either thru sponsored training programs, job search assistance, or on the job training. It stands for Workforce Investment Act. Let me know if you have any specific questions maybe I can help

Heather,
Thanks! I know very little about it. The FA coordinator at school told me to call WIA. I called and the person told me they were still working up the current class (one starts in Sept, one the end of Oct). The only info I received was to come in and fill out an application and to set up a testing date with Adult Education.

The lady at Adult Education told me about the testing (3-4 hours) and the 6 months + monitoring of your work situation, but no real details.

Apparently, WIA will possibly sponsor me because of the nursing shortage in our area.

Any information would be helpful.

I went to nursing school on the WIA program, got laid off from a tire company. WIA was a blessing to me..paid for my tuition, books, uniforms, NCLEX. I also drew a check every week til I graduated, but this check came after I ran out of my regular unemployment checks. I'm just thankful there are programs like this or I would still be in meaningless jobs that all I worked for was to pay the bills.

Thanks. It helps now that I hear a little more about what WIA actually is.

The person I spoke with didn't really have time to answer my questions. She just told me to see her after I test and apply.

Hi LSB2008

sorry it took me a few days to get back to you....the WIA program stands for workforce investment act....it is a program established by congress in 1998 to essentially help folks re-enter the workforce either thru a short term school program (must be a job in demand), on the job training, or work search assistance. basically once your training contract is approved they will cover tuition, fees, books, and possibly uniform expenses.....we also used to pay gas but that was phased out, for us anyway. your only obligation is to go to class, keep any appt's w/your WIA representative, do well, and report job info when you are employed (this helps w/future funding).....it really is a great program.

we used two different types of tests in addition to the net test you've probably already taken.....the TABE (test for adult basic education test) and something called CAREERSCOPE; on the TABE test we liked to see people working on at least a 12th grade level before we approved any training for them.....CAREERSCOPE is not a graded test it will help determine if someone has the apptitude as well as interest in a particular area.....I worked in Athens, TN so your testing requirements may be different.....the important thing is to get your application for WIA done ASAP b/c they only have a certain amount of money which = only a certain number of people

good luck!!
Heather

ps.....one more thing....it is basically like a federal grant so you don't pay it back and everyone else pays first since it is considered title IV funding....like if you are approved for any pell grants, hope scholarship etc then those grants would pay on your tuition, fees etc first and then WIA would cover the remaining costs......

Thanks, Heather!

I registered on Friday. I have to call for the test date Monday. I'm a little bummed now because the test next week is on Tuesday and my son has a dr appt. That will set me back another week.

Hopefully I'm not the only one.

Cross your fingers for me!
