How does one go about finding nursing telephone triage positions?

I'd absolutely NOT recommend a nurse contact MD's to see if you could do this for them. The liability / personal risk would be through the roof. The Guidelines program is VERY expensive and must be kept updated, and if you gave a wrong recommendation, and you're doing it on your own (going bare as we call it) , YOU are personally sued. NOT a good thing.... I guess I've seen too many instances of that in my legal review days. I'd ONLY do triage under the umbrella of a reputable and certified company. Our company adds 2-3 HUGE new accounts every month, so the growth is definitely there. With our bonus program, I'd averaging about $37-40 an hour now.... and I get to do it from HOME! It's great that you can be home with the kids.and be there with them when they are off to school. My kids are sort of grown...2 in university and 2 in highschool, but I still feel I need to be here, I know I want to. I think if you take into consideration the commute to and from work, gas, time etc, you are only making a little less. And to make a little less and be home is sooo worth it. Also, you have your foot in, giving you experience, so that can just lead to bigger and better opportunities with possibly increased income.

I'm glad to see that you like it though. I did reply to BizNurse and asked her about situations that arise that you might be stumped on, has that ever happened to you yet?

I would just call the physician if I were stumped. Or I would call my bosses, they are constantly telling me to call them if I were stumped about anything or didn't know what to do. And the other nurses are always saying to call them if I have any questions. I feel pretty safe in calling any of them. I do text the docs.

I guess you would need to check on the liability stuff huh. I work for a company right now. I don't know much about the Guidelines program, as I've only been doing this for a month. What is that? Is it the protocols that we go by? Our company goes by a triage nursing protocol book and we are just now switching over to a computer program.

Our company is growing too, not 3 per month but we do keep adding on accounts.

What company do you work for? Do they have a website?

Don't you work in an intranet so you can just text all of the other nurses and the MOD?

You take initial info in the triage, you select the appropriate guideline and you make your recommendation and base your care advice on an approved and documented guideline. ANYTHING you say not under that guideline must be backed up or documented on that triage with an approved resource, or you are really increasing your personal as well as the company's liability. That's why we ALWAYS state "based on the symptoms you told me about, my best recommendation is"....

There are TONS of lawsuits today .... stay ing within approved GLs and we're safe...

Hey Linda,

Am I allowed to ask what company you do Triage for?

I just wondered if they are also based in Canada.

I definitely want to work with a reputable company. I don't want to go to bed at night worried constantly if I may be implicated for doing the wrong thing because of lack of resources. I do understand about the protocals being quite detailed and accurate, but there are always cases, I'm sure, that will not fit a protocal to the tee. Those are the cases that i want to make sure my wording will cover my butt and also I want to know that I can easily access another source that could assist me if necessary. I really do not want to start a job in any Telephone Triage company unless I know that these things are all in place and legal.

I appreciate the feedback here. Good ol'nurses, always quick to help and respond!:redbeathe

Thankyou,

Annette RN

Yes mamm.. it's CareNet based in San Antonio and you can do a search on Google for it. Training is "in house" for 90 days and then one day a month "in house" is required. This is one of THE most awesome and reputable companies I've ever worked fo and honestly, if we didn't have our business I'd definitely be FULL TIME.... Linda/CMAS, BS, RN :yeah:

Thanks Linda!
