School using TEAS as assessment exam?

Nursing Students TEAS

Published

Hi all,

I have already been accepted into a nursing program. I start in the fall and I am registered for 4 classes: Anatomy II,1st Nursing Course, Organic & Biological Chemistry, and Nutrition.

The tests required to get into the nursing program I am in were the following:

-A math test with 20 questions (you MUST get at least 19 correct in order to pass)

-Nelson Denny Reading Test.

-(in addition to other GPA requirements etc...)

I took both tests and passed both, and after I was accepted and registered for my first nursing course, I was told that the TEAS exam was required for the first nursing course.

I was very confused at why I had to take the TEAS after I had already been accepted into the program. What happens if I do not pass? I called up nursing undergrad admissions and asked what happens if I don't pass the TEAS. I was told the following:

"The TEAS exam is required for all students who are registered for the first nursing course. There is no passing or failing the TEAS. It is only used as a means for the college to determine what they need to focus on more in terms of what students score on the different sections of the test. You do not need to study for the test. Just go in, take it, and that is it."

I am kind of worried about not studying for it because it seems very weird that I have to take the TEAS just as an assessment test? Has anyone ever heard of the TEAS being just an assessment test?

Thanks!!!

I had to take the TEAS as a means of assessment at my school (Maria College), I took it last week. We were told if you placed proficient, advanced or exemplary the grade would be used as a test or assignment grade. Those who scored below proficient will be required to attend study groups and extra help sessions..a low score typically means less success in the program, according to our administration. I was so worried about the exam and I scored advanced...truly was not that bad. Purchase the ATI manual, it was super helpful..good luck!

hmmm... I've never heard of that. Make sure the person telling you that has some good authority because you don't want to go take the test base on a receptionist information. But if it is true then at least get prepared a little for it. You always need to review any test.

Hi everyone. I am new here. I took the teas and failed the first time. I knew I would. Anyways I'm going to go try again. Can anyone tell me if I will take the same test or a different one? I don't know how to feel cuz I feel like I will fail again. I studied, but I didn't learn everything. I got the ati study manual. Talk about confusing..... I will never learn it all. So I am going to go wing it again. I hope I pass this time. But if I don't then I'm thinking it's not meant to be then. Everyone I talk to tells me I will pass it to stay positive. How do you keep positive when you live a hectic life and chasing after a 1yr old w little or no study time??? Yes I am aware that that is life. I'd like to hear from anyone that feels the way I do. Thank you!

My school does this! We took it today...I didn't study at all because I just had too much else on my plate. I ended up rocking it, I dunno I'm a freak. Anyway now I wish I had studied because my prof was all "ooooh good job!" when I was leaving. Then it dawned on me: Although it doesn't count, your teachers are going to see your score so it can't hurt to put your best foot forward. I kind of wish I had studied because I am competitive and knowing I did well without studying I wonder how I would have done with studying! Even if you aren't like me it will still be nice to do a little studying to feel comfortable with the test.

I had only 2 weeks to study with a talkative hyper 3 yr old. It can be done. I passed in the first try. I bought the practice exam from ATI and I took the book with me everywhere. I highlighted a lot and got kaplans entrance exam book from the library. They kind of explained things better in their book IMO.

When do you have to take it? I studied during a week with a major car accident that totalled my van and I ended up with whiplash LOL... crazy things happen at the worst possible time. So I only had six days to study hard. My advice to you, if you have time, is to pick up a new or used TEAS V Study Guide made by ATI - it's very comprehensive and includes two practice exams as well as questions at the end of every new section of material they talk about. Worth every penny imo.

If you don't have time to study, I recommend just brushing up on your normal PEMDAS, FOIL, solve for X, irrational numbers etc. Science is the hardest part, my GOODNESS it is a pain, because the spectrum is very broad. Some highlights are Punnitt squares, cell types, mitosis, meiosis, some anatomy/phys, etc... it's not quite as scary as it sounds but I was out of school since I made the terrible choice to drop out at sixteen back in 2000 -.-

May as well study if you can for a better score, but if your school just uses it as an assessment, you don't have to stress *quite* as much. Wishing you good luck, and enjoy nursing school!!!

Thank you all for your responses! I e-mailed the associate dean to the nursing program just to make sure the secretary was not misinformed! I hope it is just an assessment class because I am already taking a chemistry prep course for Organic/Bio chem in the fall! Studying for the TEAS in addition to that will NOT be fun!!!

The secret to my success was quiet time and copious amounts of Starbucks ;) I made my mother take the kids for the days I was studying so I would be uninterrupted. A great technique for studying is, if you hit a hard spot that makes ZERO sense, walk away. Come back in five minutes and somehow it is easier to digest!

I am sure you will do fine! The scariest part of the TEAS is the waiting to take it - that's a fact. :)

Good luck! Hopefully you will pass regardless.

would make--

Get the ATI TEAS V Study Manual, & get as much out of it as you can.

Since all sections (in the study manual) deal with one Q. at a time, study time can be used in 5- & 10-min. increments if necessary.

If you are very limited in time until the exam, at least read the answers to the 2 sample tests in the manual--because the rationale of each Q. is explained; there is a lot of information in those answers.

RainbowDash has hit the high points for the Science section. It's useful to be able to set up a (simple) Punnett square, to say no more, even if a Q. may not require doing so.
