Why I want to be a Nurse!!!!

OK, so this is my story,

I became a CNA when i was 18 (bout 10 years ago) I worked in a nursing home where there was a lady that was 108 years old, she was bedridden and had to be fed and everyone hated to take care of her cause she was a bit harder than the others to feed. I absolutly loved her. she was the reason i wanted to be there to help. when people came in she would start singing amazing grace, no matter what u did with her wether it was a bath or time to eat she was wonderful. She had alzheimers(not sure of the spelling havent started nursing school yet lol) but she was my first loss. She died while i was on my shift and i got to get her ready for the family to come in the whole time i kept singing to myself at first but then aloud amazing grace cause her pain was finally over. she lived a long life and the last thing i heard her do was singing amazing grace. That is the most memorable time from my life. I cant wait to have those days when i feel like something i did made a difference. I realize this site is a stress reliever for some but I was beginning to get really nervous about nursing school with reading some of the threads worried that I wouldnt be able to handle the stress. Well Nursing school starts in 2 weeks and I cant wait

Thanks
Christi

Thanks, Christi, for sharing an awesome testimony to the power of ONE - One person can truly make a wonderful difference in another's life, as you certainly did with this amazing patient. This, I believe, is the reason we are on this earth - to make a difference. Best wishes for success in nursing school and please come here to post often.

Christi...some 20 years ago, I too became a CNA..I was 22 I think, if only for a very short time before I became pregnant with my 2nd child and then took Maternity leave. I then took a long road down the clerical and retail path.

Before becoming a CNA though, I was in Housekeeping. One of the things I enjoyed BEST about Housekeeping was getting to know the residents there in the Nursing Home. We could only do so many things for them, sure, BUT to just beable to get to know them, talk to them, let them know we care, help pull up a blanket to make them comfortable, go ask a nurse for them for simple things. Oh..and keep things clean around them too of course! A job for which I'm sure I was greatly appreciated . For all these reasons, Nursing appealed to me and I decided to get my Nurse Aid certification.

I would also observe, with alot of interest actually, what the LPNs and RNs did daily. I could definitely see myself in a position like that. Through the years I've had some personal experiences with family members being in the hospital for extended periods, and the care they recieved was excellent...and I had to continue alot of that care at home. Quite the learning experience! Maybe this in God's plan for me..I've just taken some time to get there, acquiring my own experiences along the way...hmmm

I am hoping to begin school in January to get my pre-reqs in for the RN course, OR LPN, whichever feels best. I pray that I do well and meet all my goals!

Since it's been a few months since Nursing school started for you...how are you doing??

I am not even in nursing school yet but this is why I want to be a nurse. I have had many surgeries, five to be exact, the most recent of which was this past Augest 18. Nurses have made me feel special, as if I mattered. I still remember a few stories. I was five and I was in the hospital either right after my surgery or a few days after I was reliesed (I was readmitted due to UTI). I needed blood work done and was not letting the tech anywhere near me. I HATED needles (still due in fact). But my nurse was in the room at the time and told me that she had "needed blood the other day and this tech had taken her blood and was very good" so I let him. I have wanted to be a nurse since I was really small like that. This summer it was reaffermed my OR nurse said to me in pre-op "I will be there with you the whole time and will take care of you". That made me feel safe and I was less worried then I had been I don't get worried till I am in the pre-op area and after she said that I was barely even scared even then.
