Those thank you's go a long way

So there I was, having a tough night in the ER. 5 pts, couple of belly pain's, acute pancreatitus, intractable pain (not drug seeker but the real thing d/t spinal stenosis) and yes, 1 actual drug seeker (great actor though). Orders coming in simultaneously, docs calling to give more orders, call bells going off, charting being done on scrap paper for later input into the computer, ya know, the usual new grad time management spin & futz. Actually get to d/c one of the belly pains. She's developmentally & physically disabled, very pleasant, just has a full plate medically so to speak. Everything's done and her aide is starting to wheelchair her out when the pt yells, "Wait, I forgot say goodbye to {insert my 1st name}!" The aide wheels her over to me and the pt grabs my hand and tells me how nice I was, how well I treated her and that she was glad I had been her nurse. All I could say was "you're welcome". Anything else and I probably would've teared up. She then leaves, I turn around and the medical director, charge nurse and other staff are standing there smiling at me.

And magically, everything fell into place after that. Got everybody else admitted or discharged, finished up my charting and left on time. As Travolta said in Broken Arrow, "Ain't it cool?".

I love happy tales. Sometimes we get so mucked up with gripes. Your story is refreshing.

I loved your story.

Can I tell one too?

I had a very dear patient who I first met three weeks ago. She was only going to be a couple of weeks with us for rehab. When she heard my accent and knew I was from England she said she had visited and loved it. I told her a funny story of my own dear Mother who called me a week before Mothers Day is celebrated in England to "remind" me, as my mother knew it wouldn't be on American calendars. British Mothers day was this past March.

As a thank you gift on her discharge, and gosh knows where she got it, she gave me a small 2009 calendar from Britain with London scenes on it. It is without a doubt the best thank you I've ever had from a patient.

That says you were being a great nurse! To me, being a great nurse is as much about kindness and caring as it is medical knowledge. I am a new grad currently working in an urgent care/family practice clinc. It is a great place to get a lot of experience and have patients that are "regulars" at the same time. When a pt leaves and says how nice our office staff is or gives me a hug along with a thank you...those are the days that make me proud to be a nurse.

I had a pt last wk, i had 4 days off!! woohoo..back today.. anyhow.. i had this pt come up and i knew i had heard the name, well i walked into the room and i knew the person! his wife came over and gave me a huge hug and the pt in the bed made me come over and gave me a huge hug! They said my name as soon as i walked in.
I work on an ortho/gyn/uro floor. the ortho stuff we do with one of the doc's is like external fixators so those pt's are "regular's" also with all that is required of those plus the things that can go wrong. so we get to know some of them too! so last time this pt was in i got to do a TON of pt teaching with him and his wife on all this, like it took me couple of hours, it was great! that is my FAVORITE part i think of nrsing, so i really make sure they understand. so when i walked in and they were so excited to see me, it made my day!

i LOVE what i do!
