Default Hurricane Alicia
When Hurricaine Alicia came through Houston a few years back and dumped all that rain in the medical center our hospital in Katy (30 miles from Houston) received about 15 admissions on one shift due to evacuations. After things settled down and the patients were able to be discharged, we had a nightmare situaton trying to get some of these people home- some lived 60+ miles away. One little old lady on our floor in particular had no family near by who were able to pick her up. I worked for many hours that day trying to arrange transportation for her. She had a public transportation bus pass but in Katy we have no bus routes. As it turned out, I arranged for a cab to take her to a particular bus stop which in turn took her home. She asked for my home address to send me something "special". I usually would not consider giving out personal information but she looked so disappointed when I hesitated to give it to her. So I did and I received a lovely handwritten card that I keep tucked away safely. I didn't share the card with anyone else...it was just for me. When I have a bad day at the hospital, I pull that card out of hiding and it refreshes me. It helps me to remember why I became a nurse.

Default Thank you!
I'm preparing to start school in Aug. and was pretty scared after reading the horror stories. This one was what I needed! I wish there were more stories here like yours!

Thank you so very much for sharing with us! I'm leaving soon to take my nursing school entrance exam at noon today, and the scene you described is what I'm going to think of to calm my nerves. That is why I want to be a nurse.....

Again, thank you & God bless,
Beth

Thanks for sharing such an inspirational story. I think I'll print it out and staple it to my forehead to help me get through those hard days in nursing school! LOL I only hope that I will be able to make such a difference in my patients lives. God Bless!!

Thank you guys for sharing those wonderful experiences with us. I have been reading anything and everything on this board since I discovered it a couple of days ago. I am about to start my pre nursing classes. But the horror stories about back stabbing doctors and nurses and the god forsaken policies and politics have kind of scared me. But this post has really helped some of my fears! Thanks again guys!

I'm glad you're enjoying this.

Nursing, like almost everything else in life, is pretty much whatever you make it......You can choose to be angry and bitter about the workload, the management, the snippy co-workers, the doctors, the bureaucracy, the ungrateful patients, the hours, etc., etc., etc.......OR you can choose to make peace with what is, and work to change what isn't how you'd like it to be.

It's all in the attitude. I prefer to start my shift wondering what interesting situations and people I might meet that day, then talk it over with the Lord and ask Him to help me deal with whatever comes up. That's not to say I never get stressed out, or that I never complain, or even that I never lose it on occasion (like last week, when I got three brand-new patients within 15 minutes of each other and they wanted me to take still another admit "because you only have three patients"---ARRRRRRGGGHHHH!!!!! ) But these things happen, and everyone in every line of work has their bad days. I always think of the poor souls working at WalMart or 7-11 for minimum wage whenever I'm tempted to feel sorry for myself........at least, when I have a hard day, I get paid decently for my trouble, and when I have a good day.....well, it's just about the greatest feeling in the world to know I've made a difference in someone's life.

Thank you for the beautiful story, I have been a nurse for 25 years and have many wonderful stories, I think we use this board to vent a great deal. I forget there are nursing students reading these stories & could get discouraged or scared. I hope all prospective nurses read this & consider a couple things. First we are venting & trying to decide what to do in trying or difficult positions, but when asked I bet most nurses will not trade what they do for another position. Venting your frustrations helps you feel better. It is far more fun to write the bad things instead of the good. There are not many positions or careers you can choose that on any given day you might save someones life!!! There is no greater feeling, no better adrenaline rush, no better calling. Treat this power with the due reverence it demads. Don't get to full of yourself because the next day will probably be the ones we right about most & make you shake your head and wonder why. The scary stories will help you remember you are not working at a convenience store & everything you do can have consequences. Please hold your heads up go forward and help others when you get on this end of your career you will never be sorry.
