Mary Lewis Wyche - Pioneer of Organized Nursing in North Carolina

Mary Lewis Wyche is considered the pioneer of organized nursing in North Carolina. She was the founder of the North Carolina Nurses Association in 1902. She spearheaded the first nursing practice act in the country which was passed on March 3, 1903. In education, Wyche foresaw the need to standardize nursing school educational requirements. She established three schools, one of which is still known today for the quality of its nursing program.
