That is so awesome! He made you both very happy, so I don't see any drawback at all!! I would love to do something like that for someone before I die =)

Wow, I had a drunk guy offer me part of his snickers bar the other night. Besides that, I have never accepted gifts from a patient in a hospital or out of hospital setting.

In any case, I think it's pretty cool that you impacted his life that much.

Good luck in nursing school...

What a wonderful testimony. You obviously had a great impact on this man in his final days by being such a wonderful caregiver. I know you gave him great joy in accepting his generous gift.

I hope you will continue to spread his good and generous spirit with others whose lives you touch as you further your education. We'll be anxious to hear updates.

To the OP: I personally find nothing wrong with what you did, and I also don't think anyone has any right to tell you that you shouldn't have accepted the money.

I found your story to be both inspiring and amazing. I think, from time to time, some of us in healthcare lose sight of one of the most important aspects of nursing care, which is compassion. You not only showed compassion toward the patient you were taking care of, but you also felt strongly about what you wanted to do and it was eminent to him that you shouldn't be doing anything else.

Best of luck to you.

I will say this "What is mine..is mine" I will give it to whom I choose. But with the gift comes the responsibility of it. In the big picture of it all, you have now been given a gift with strings. They define what you do with it. Not only will you finish school, but when you are done...you have the responsibility to assist someone else. This is how we pass on gifts.

I concur.

If it were me, and the patient who gave me the money had any family still living (or even any close friends that you of) I'd be in close contact with them, letting them know of your progress.

It just dawned on me that this gift might be viewed as unethical under my State's BON and could be cause to lose one's license. Of course I am happy for you, but I do not know if I would have accepted due to the legalities.... BTW, I come from very humble beginnings and am still struggling too so I understand why you have accepted the gift...!!! I am not judging you to be right or wrong. GL!
