Well, thank you all for your kind words! There have been low times like with everything in life but overall I have enjoyed the experience. Puts me in the mind of something I saw in somebody's signature on another forum ~ Life shouldn't be just a long slog but rather a heady, downhill race ending with you saying "Wow - what a rush!" ~ Well, it's certainly been that for me and it's not over yet.

I loved ...
- being able to make a difference to a patient's surgical experience
- being in possession of knowledge about joint replacements and all sorts of other surgery
- being able to contribute to the treatment/surgery/whatever
- being a source of information and guidance to others whether they were nurses, doctors, other disciplines
- teaching
- knowing that, after all these years, there is still things to learn
- knowing that just because a surgeon does a procedure differently from others you have seen doesn't make it 'wrong'!
- and finally, being able to translate surgery, medicine and other such things into language that is easily understood by patients.

This last one I use on a daily basis now as I am resident 'specialist' advisor on a hip/knee joint replacement forum which has grown from 400+ to 1400 members in the year I have been there. *puffs out chest*!! Members come in frightened, anxious and seeking reassurance, encouragement, information and support which I can hand out in spadefuls! VERY satisfying! (anyone interested in the url feel free to pm me!)

That is so neat, you started on my birthday, but 10 years prior to me being born. Congrats!

AWESOME! Congratulations!
And, by the way, I love to hear how nursing "used to be." Could you delight me with some anecdotes about nursing during the Eisenhower administration?
