A nursing student at 48. My journey could be yours... - page 3

In my 49 years of life I have had many life-changing events as we all do. I was born the eldest of two children. My younger brother was born in 1963 and diagnosed as "severely mentally retarded," a... Read More

Just to join in, I graduated at 52. I in part got interested by being the care provider for my sister as she fought breast cancer. The only funny thing about being an older graduate is how often people assume I've been a nurse for a while because of my age....it sometimes hard to confess "no not even a year yet". While I still may be "wet behind the ears" in terms of nursing knowledge and skills I do find that my people skills are probably sharper than some might expect, and is a big advantage.

You have also inspired me. I'm in my CNA training right now, at age 49. I am also a breast cancer survivor. Nothing will make me give up on this. I am planning to start my prerequisites this fall. Thanks so much for sharing your story!!

Awesome! Whenever I hear my friends say that they'd be 40something or 50something after going back to school, I ask them, "Well, how old do you plan on being in 4 years if you didn't go back to school?"

Thank you so much for inspiring me to move forward with my nursing career!!!! I cant tell you what an inspiration this article was for me. I started nursing school at the age of 50. I am now 53 and I did graduate last Dec. 2011. It is now 6 months later and I still have not taken the NCLEX exam! Fear of failure has overtaken me and Ive been stalled out. Reading about everyone's experience has been a tremendous encouragement for me. Ive always been a bit of a worry wort, I just need reminding every now and then that it can be done! I cant remember which member has this signature line on her posts, but it has been very encouraging to me as well. Here it is: "If God brings you to it.... He will bring you through it". I LOVE that!! Ive been through the nursing school "hell" so its time to start anew with a fresh new career! Thank you!

Yes do study for your NCLEX. When you receive your nursing license, you will be overjoyed!. Although I am no longer able to work in nursing, my license is proudly displayed on my wall. That's how much I love nursing. I believe you will love it just as much once you pass your NCLEX.

Thank you, THANK YOU for your story! I'm 51 and I've just been accepted to an associate degree nursing program two hours from where I live. I'm scared nearly to death over the thought of quitting my job, renting out my current home, and moving to a new city to start school. Your story and the comments left by others close to my age have reassured me that I'm doing the right thing by taking on such a risk.

I resigned from my IT job at 48, went into nursing school and became a RN at 50. I think this is one of the few careers that our age is really on our side. I love this career.
