Moving cross-country for CRNA school.

I'm moving approx. 2,500 miles to attend CRNA school. I wanted to read what some of you did or are going to do for moving (moving truck vs. hiring moving co., etc). Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm a female who is not good at driving extremely large vehicles, so I paid $4,000 to hire a moving company to transport my things from California to Texas. It was so expensive because I had more than 2 tons worth of furniture and other crap. I could not imagine driving an 18-wheeler for 1,400 miles on the interstate.

By the way, I'm not taking the CRNA route. My response pertains to my experience with relocation halfway across the country.

Thanks so much for your input. I know it's so expensive, huh! My wife and I are going to really try to get rid of as much stuff as possible. Renting a truck is less expensive upfront, but then one has to pay for all the gasoline...

I have moved cross country several times and we always rent a moving truck and do it ourselves.

Yes we pare down, majorily. Anything that we could sell then get just as cheap on craiglist over there is gone. Kids clothes they are growing out of or don't wear are also gone...same with toys. No way could I afford thousands to be moved. truck is like 1200, gas about the same, not including gas for the car.

fiance drives the moving truck, I drive the car, and the kids change seats a lot! lol We also only stay maybe one night in a hotel, otherwise it totally eats at your time. We are rest stop sleepers like the truckers. We pack a couple of coolers with easy food stuffs, water, snacks, etc so we only eat out maybe once a day. We usually make is across in about 4-5 days.

Gearing up for another cross country move in April! Wa to Va!

I would do it myself. It will save you a lot of money. I know you mentioned the amount of debt you get in CRNA school and you are concerned about that (as we all are). I would save the money doing it yourself. A moving company isn't going to eat the cost of gas. They will have that added in. When I moved from Utah to New Mexico it cost around $4000 to hire it out. The most expensive part was hiring packers in Utah (they only loaded the truck, we packed the boxes). The best price my wife found was around $120/hour. The $4K cost was us driving it too. In Utah it would not be hard to get people around you to help you load for free (I just didn't do it because my job reimbursed me). Trust me, you will save a lot of money doing it yourself.

yikes, man that sounds like alot of time, money, and hassle. I'm just going from (north) FL to MD. I'm single with no kids and I could probably fit all my things in a large DIY truck. I done a pod before moving from TN back to FL and I'll probably just do that again this time since all I have is a 1 bed apt

My advice, having recently moved cross country. Price how much it will cost you to move and then value your stuff and decide how much it will cost you to replace it. We were lucky because my husbands job paid for our move BUT we kept a storage unit with stuff that wouldn't fit into our small apartment. After paying for the storage unit for a year we went back to move what was left and realized that, with the amount we were paying for the storage unit, we probably could have replaced almost everything in there. Just something to ponder on.

Yes we do that a lot with all of our moves. Get rid of stuff on craigslist then buy used again when we get there

If you can find a place with furniture included, there isn't really much you need to bring. I would then sell all my furniture and have some cash for the move. It seems you
