CRNA school and pregnancy

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone has any advice. I have been accepted into CRNA school, which starts this January. I just recently found out that I was pregnant. I am wondering if any one has encountered this or known someone who has. I have not told my school yet and do not know if there is an option to postpone for a year. I do know how much of a commitment CRNA school is and know I will not have any time. I will have a support system between my partner and family as my mother plans to move down to help take care of the baby while I am in school. Thanks for any help.

I think it really depends on you, the individual..I am in my 4th sem (full time clinicals)...I have a classmate who was pregnant when we started our program... She is tough(she had the baby on a thursday and was back in class doing her presentation on Monday)..of course she left after she presented but was in class later on in the week...It also depends on your program...will it be a front loaded program(didactics up front) or would it be a mixture of clinicals and didactics because she had the baby before we started clinicals so that worked out in her favor...Maybe you should take a look at your schools course and try to see what classes you would be in to try and see how heavy that sem will be...Also our program has camtasia(where the class/lecture is als recorded online for us to go back and watch/listen to incase we missed something in class) if the program has something like that then maybe that would help out also...Well hope I gave you a little insight. But she is doing great in the program:jester:

I gave birth to my 4th baby 3 months after I started my NA program (front-loaded, not in full-time clinicals yet at that time). He was 36 weeks (premature) and I had a C-section. I was back to class 1 week after I gave birth, by choice, because I did not want to be behind in school work. Besides, my baby was in the NICU for about 2 weeks and I had to go there everyday anyway (same hospital as my school). I just went ahead and didn't skip a beat in attending classes, taking exams, giving presentations, and writing papers, in between taking care of my newborn ---and I did well, if I may say so myself. It was a big blessing that we had a few weeks of Christmas break afterwards. It is also a big help that I have a very supportive husband (he took 2 weeks paternity leave and drove for me to and from school) and mother (who stays with us and helps us with so many things). My point is, it is very doable, and I want you not to be discouraged. My baby is my greatest source of joy, especially after a hard day in the OR. Things would fall into place for you, don't worry. Believe that you can make it work and be positive about it. God will surely make things possible for you. Good luck!

Studying tonight for 2nd test of the week after spending 16 hrs Sat and Sun studying. Could never, ever do this with a baby. Just me but I think it's hard enough as it is. I wish you the best of luck, but I do know that someone in my class left for medical reasons at the beginning of our program and she is returning in the fall.

I have known a few to postpone for one year. But you should check with your school after getting accepted. It can be done without taking much time off, but you would need a very good support system and secondary caregiver for the baby. Good luck. If at all possible it would be best not to take a year off, that is alot of time to forget everything, especially if your program is front loaded. It would be extremely hard to just jump back in.
