Any tips for UNE organic chem final?

I'm hoping someone here has some advice they might be able to share with me. I'm planning on applying to school in the fall. Unfortunately, my sciences are now over 10 years old so I decided to do UNE's online organic chemistry class. I've never had much trouble with chemistry before so I thought it would be fine. I was wrong. I am having such a difficult time in this course. I feel like it's too abstract for my brain (I do much better when I'm able to visualize). At the rate I am going, I'll end up with a C in the course. I've been doing well on the labs, but averaging Cs on the quizzes. I only have 4 more weeks to go, and I know the final counts for most of the grade. I feel like a lot of the quiz questions are coming out of left field. I can't find the answers in the book or in his lecture. The prof has been very helpful when I've emailed him after the quizzes, but that's obviously a little too late. I really want to try to pull my grade up on the final. I would be so grateful to anyone who took this course who can give me some tips. Thank you so much.

I just finished up the UNE distance Organic Chemistry I course so I will share my $0.02.

The course is tough. Lots of self-teaching MUST be done in order to do well in the course. The textbook is required, but will only take you about halfway to true comprehension. So if you are not naturally gifted at chemistry (which I most certainly am NOT), then you will need to tap in to outside sources for help. Organic Chemistry as a Second Language was a nice resource, but be sure to get both "First Semester Topics" and "Second Semester Topics" as this course covers pretty much all of both books. Khan Academy helped quite a bit early on, especially with drawing out molecules to identify isomers and better understanding of resonance structures. Also, the textbook comes with a polyhedron molecular model kit for building molecules. I was resistant to use it initially, but once I started building molecules regularly it was a snap to identify R/S, enantiomers/diastereomers, and L- D-carbohydrates.

The bread and butter of this course though, is reactions. There's no way around it, you have to have a certain level of "big picture" comprehension to get these in a timely manner, which you will need to do on the final. Four hours seems like a lot, but I finished with 3 minutes to spare. Page tabs and highlighting the book helps a lot for quick reference. What really saved my butt though, was 2 things: "Master Organic Chemisty" study guides (get the first 2, $17 each), and "Organic Chemistry Reactions Quick Study: Academic" ($5 on Amazon). Both of which are absolutely allowed to be used on the final, and they made multi-step reactions SO MUCH EASIER to navigate.

For those currently taking the course, stay with it. I felt 100% lost after Module 11 (of 15), but then I got on board with these outside aids, stayed persistent, studied about 10-12hrs/week, and ultimately did fine. I finished with a 'A' in the course strictly because I did very well on the final, which is excellently represented by the Module Quizzes.

Lastly, if you don't know a particular topic or why you got a question wrong on the module quiz, email the professor. I probably bugged him with all my questions, but he answered all of them very thoroughly and always encouraged me to keep asking if I was confused or had trouble understanding a concept.

Getting Started — Master Organic Chemistry

I'm currently enrolled on chapter 9...scheduled to take the final early october...have you taken it yet? if so, how was it?

Try Home • Orgo Made Simple. They have good reviews of chapters, and they offer a prep class if you're about to take the class.
