Albany Medical CRNA Program

Hey SRNAs,

Looking for Albany Medical SRNA's. I am not seeing a ton of current posts about this program.

Can you tell me about the program? Pros/cons? What their typical candidate is? I read that they don't teach open hearts- only observation. Is that accurate?

Hey,

First I would like to mention I did not chose to attend Albany but interviewed and was accepted. My reasons for opt another program is not a reflection against Albany, it was simply about not having to relocating my family. That being said it was a wonderful interview and the program is top notch. The interview last for about three hours as you spend individual time with each program director. The conversation is very friendly and informal. Some questions are asked about experience but by no means is a grilling. You will take a critical care exam that is very similar to the CCRN exam. The classrooms are fantastic as they have their own floor of a newer building. Students are provided access to classrooms 24hrs a day. The simulation lab is truly top notch. Only judging from the interview clinical experiences seem good but nothing too special. They have a rolling admission process and I highly recommend any hopeful SRNA apply to Albany. The staff seems to really care about their students' success. Don't worry too much about your stats as they look deeper into each candidate. If I wasn't a married homeowner Albany would have been at the top of my list.

For those who will be interviewing in Albany this year, the 2017 cohort, and need a place to stay for the interview, feel free to shoot me an email. I'm a current student in the program and my wife and I bought a house here in Albany with some extra rooms. We could actually house several of you. It would be a good way for you guys to meet each other and relieve a little tension. When I interviewed here, I used airbnb to pick the brains of the hosts about the area since I had no idea about it. Of course, they knew nothing about the program. You could kind of kill two birds with one stone with us. :) The school will provide you with some hotel options near the school but they are kind of expensive… Good luck with your interviews! Hey! It is going well! You can get an idea of the curriculum on AMC's website. It looks daunting but it is doable. No day/week is really the same. One might be in class for 6 or 7 hrs of lecture one day and have that same day off next week. The schedule is set, but it is just dense on some days. Just be flexible! Hope that helps!

Thanks for the response! How many hours would you say the commitment is per week? Would you say you still have a decent amount of time for family and other things outside of the program? I looked at the curriculum but it's hard to get a feel for what that actually means.

It varies. It's a full time gig so count on 40 hrs at least. After that, it'll be up to the individual and their needs. You'll need understanding family members for sure, but you'll find that there is time for them. You certainly need to make the time for them! :)

Hi there! Thank you for sharing your experience. I wanted to reach out to ask you if you felt the Albany CRNA program was do-able, and what your stress level was like in terms of being able to commit to your family/personal while attending the program. I also wanted to ask what you felt like the most stressful aspects/semesters of the program were for you. Thank you!
