2 ICU Job offers...which is best for CRNA school admissions

Nursing Students SRNA

Published

Hello!

Please help. I have to job offers for ICU's. I am a new graduate nurse and feel very privileged to have these options.

Option 1) Level 1 trauma center MICU with good pay. The hospital is a public teaching institution that is known for frequent leadership changes and dissatisfied staff and nurses. However, you get lots of experience and exposure to unique cases in this hospital. A big positive for me is that this position is for day shift, I am NOT a night person.

Option 2) A position in the intermediate care intensive care unit at a top private hospital health system with several nationally ranking specialties. This hospital is however, not a trauma center or teaching hospital. This hospital is known in the area as the "best hospital for nurses." Every nurse I know loves this hospital. A negative for this position is that it is on nights and I am NOT a night person.

I am truly torn. They both require 2 year contracts.

Please help me settle this!

Take Option 1

Option 1. Day shift makes it. Plus, you want to go to CRNA school so you won't be there forever anyway.

Specializes in Cardiothoracic ICU.

intermediate ICU probably wont even count for ICU experience. Option 1.

Thank you all! That was quick! I guess option 1 is a no brainer, and you are correct, I won't be there forever.

I greatly appreciate your advice!

1. Option #1 would be best.

2. Check your spelling.

3. Nothing wrong with learning to be a night person especially if you're going to have to take call as a CRNA.

:)

Specializes in NTICU.

I would also agree with option 1 but check with what the crna schools are looking for level of experience. I work in a level 2 facility with a SICU, MICU, CICU, and a NTICU and the crna school here perfers the level 2 facility's SICU experience. The schools around me look for experience with hemodynamic monitoring and cardiovascular medications (pressors) usage, and we definitely get that in the SICU but not often in the MICU. The level 1 facility does not have an SICU and all they have is an ICU, NTICU and CCU.

What facility did you choose? Are you in CRNA school now?

I am staying at the level 2 and transfering to SICU when I return to work. I am not in CRNA school due to needing neck surgery and it can take up to 1 year with the fusion to be complete without complications. So in the mean time I am working at getting my Critical Care certification (this is what the dean of the program said to do as it looks good on the application). I am also trying to figure out if I am going to stay in state or out of state. When asking the dean of one school which school to goto if getting accepted and she said goto the school you got accepted to because of the competitive application process.

I chose option 1! I will be applying to CRNA school in 3 years.

2 years I mean

Hey I know that this is an older post but, I was wondering which job you took. I am trying to move to Atlanta and work in the SICU. From what I can see it it very hard to get on. So I just want to see what you decided and if you can give me any tips thanks.
