Simmons University School of Nursing FNP online program

Information on requirements for Simmons University FNP program. Nursing Students NP Students Article

Updated:

Here is some information I found about Simmons from my research:

The only states not approved are North Carolina, Tennessee, New York, and Delaware - but they are actively working with these states to gain state board approval.

The campus-based program has a 100% pass rate on the certification exam, this year is the first year they have offered the online program so no pass rate from that yet given, although the courses are taught by some of the same professors who teach the in-person courses.

Set up is the same as Georgetown University (they utilize the same online program for their school with the weekly courses live online, and the pre-recorded lectures and videos to watch on your own time)

18 months full time, 14wk terms with 2-3 wk break between each term, ONE campus visit required for skills assessment. 24mo part time, everything else the same as full time.

Admission Requirements:

The Nursing@Simmons application requires applicants to have or submit the following:

Bachelor's degree from a U.S. Department of Education and NLNAC or CCNE- accredited institution.

Current U.S. Registered Nurse (R.N.) license, and have successfully completed (83 or better) a three-credit course in statistics and health assessment.

Current resume.

One- to two-page personal statement that describes your academic interests, your relevant clinical experience, and your reasons for pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing.

Transcript(s) of your academic record (see below).

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), if your native language is not English. The School of Nursing and Health Sciences TOEFL code is 3761.

The General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required, but if you feel GRE scores will strengthen your application, please contact an Admissions Counselor at 855-461-SIMM (855-461-7466).

3 Letters of Recommendation From:

A clinical supervisor or nurse manager who has direct knowledge of your work in the clinical setting.

A professor, faculty member, or academic advisor who can provide a meaningful assessment of your academic record.

A practicing clinical nursing professional who has served as a mentor.

Transcripts

Sealed official academic transcripts must be received by mail from all postsecondary institutions you have attended, even if a degree was not obtained, including community colleges.

Applicants who studied outside of the United States must have completed the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree. All coursework from non-U.S. institutions must be evaluated by World Education Services.

A moderate increase in tuition should be expected each academic year. Tuition includes simulations, assessments, technology platform licensing and support. Tuition does not include the cost of books and a $100 student fee per term.

Personal Notes

They have been the NICEST admissions reps, not overly pushy, and very thorough with helping me get all my information incorrectly. I applied to Georgetown first, and they too were nice, but since submitting my app, I can't seem to get anyone to reply to me and I still do not have a decision yet. The University of Cincinnati is not good about getting back to you via phone but do usually get a response within 2-3 days to my questions. Of the three I'm honestly now more impressed with Simmons than any of the others, so I'm hoping in the next couple of weeks to get an acceptance. I really wanted GU, but Simmons is almost $40K cheaper for the same type of set up.

Hope this helps some others with their lists of schools they want to go to! ?

I was upfront with my recommenders and told them that I may apply to 3-4 grad schools and would it be okay if I listed them as a reference at each. they were completely okay with that and for the most part used the same letter just titled it to each individual school as well as filled out the online survey (my medical director was doing it and asked me to look at how he rated me LOL) I was like it's your decision how you rate it! I ended up with three applications and they had no problems doing that for me.

I did want GU the most first, and applied for May 2014 start date, until a week or so ago I was introduced to Simmons College (uses the same technology platform as GU's online campus) and now that is truly my first pick, with GU being #2, and UC #3. I am hopeful to get into any one of the three though as all have great pass rates, and each have their good and bad aspects. If by some miracle I am accepted to all three I have no idea what I'll do LOL...will really have to sit down at that point and look at what will fit me and my family the best at the time. Right now it's a guessing game as to work, school, and family life, until I know the exact school i get into. Good luck to everyone who applied, my app got pushed back by a couple weeks at GU and Simmons was just finalized and submitted, so hopefully in the next 2-3 wks I will hear something from both. UC I figure I won't hear anything from until the end of NOV or beginning of Dec at the earliest.

Hi, I have been following this thread and I am so glad I found it! I too am very interested in Simmons online program. The admissions advisor has been the friendliest and most professional advisor I have talked to. They are so prompt to return calls and thorough with information. Frontier was my number one choice for FNP school, but they are a little slow to return calls. Tasha, I hope you get accepted at Simmons. So far, it sounds like a great school. I do wish they offered the DNP though. I am scheduled to graduate next summer from my RN-BSN program, so I will start the application progress after the new year. I know that Simmons online is pretty new but I guess they will have a September cohort (I am hoping). Tasha, keep us posted regarding your applications! Best wishes, everyone!

I agree they have been fantastic with their communication. It will probably br about 3 more weeks til I hear something. My application packet is being finalized as of today so hoping its all submitted on Monday! I have spoken to several other applicants and a couple who have been accepted with conditions (taking an additional course or remedial class etc) so it seems they really do look at the person in a holistic manner and dont just turn people away who are qualified yet may be lacking slightly but not significantly enough to deny them addimission. Hopefully I will be accepted and if not I can honestly say that id still recommend them regardless due to their kind and caring attitude and helpfulness.

Tasha

Tasha, I really wish there was someone here on allnurses who is currently attending Simmons. I would love to know how the program is going so far. Also, I would like to know how difficult it is to manage work and school. I would like to go full-time but I don't want to be overwhelmed. It is nice that the learning is online interactive... Same professors and students. I really like that!

Well yhe program Online just started. 2wks ago I know there was one on here that said she was just starting but can't remember who that was. Come March there will be two cohorts that have begun so I'm sure there will be more postings then. I'm pretty sure we will hear the sane from Simmons students that u hear from Georgetown ones. The classes are identical from my research.

Also when I talked to the addimission rep classes are offered 7 days a week arty varying times (some very late evening classes to accommodate overseas and West coast students) which was not something GU offered as their classes are Tue Wed thurs some Friday and Sat AM only. I prefer late evening quote kids sleep so that would work beret for me which is why I'm really praying I get in. They're on campus program has 100% pass rate so I'm confident that the online will be just as good. I was disappointed not to get GU but even my GU adviser recommended the Simmons program after denial. I had already applied to Simmons before he said anything about it so that masse me feel better as well.

Hey everyone,

I am a little late to this board. I too, was trying to find out more about the Simmons FNP program and hear peoples opinions about it so far. I have applied for the program and am anxiously waiting to hear back. Have any of you that have applied heard back yet?

Does Simmons find your preceptorship for you like GU? What about cost vs GU?

Tasha: when do you start? You going to work still? What's your plan to finance it?

I start March 24, 2014 in the Full time cohort. I have the GI bill for 16 months at 100% and will have to take out stafford loans to cover the remainder. I am going to try to work the first term and see how I do, if I can't handle it I will be finding other employment at part time or per diem until through with school. Right now I work M-F 8-5, home by 6p, so as long as there are online classes from 7p on in the evening (which i was told there would be) then I'll work the first two terms...the final three terms with clinical hours and classwork there is no way I can work more than per diem/part time.
