Seattle U - APNI 2013

Hello everyone - this is my second time applying. A month ago, I bombed the interview!

If this is your first time applying, there's a world of information from previous years, especially from the 2012 thread where we reached more than one thousand messages.

I know it's super early to start this thread, but this whole thing takes a long time to prepare and the more time we have before the deadline, the better.

I'm from the Seattle area, my background is Microbiology from the UW and I am again applying for the midwifery track.

Fauc7621, I also got into PLU. I have an interview for the AGNP track on Saturday. What were your deciding factors in choosing PLU over Seattle U? I'm curious, since I'm trying to decide which program would be a better option for me.

Icelind, I feel AWEFUL. I wish we could somehow interview together! This is a really egregious error. No one really wins because I guess I lost a week of preparation and they don't even give you one to make up for it. Like atomicgirl, I feel they owe you an interview. I don't know what else to say, this is so shocking. I did find it odd that the first email they sent me said something like "as indicated previously, you are invited."

Congratulations!

I like their program structure. My father, mother, and both of my sisters are all nurses and none of them work in the specialties they imagined themselves in when starting out in nursing school. I'm willing to sacrifice the security that comes with beginning a program in the FNP track for the option to pursue a different specialty if I change my mind. The fact that it's competitive is a bummer, but I figure the onus is on me to do well so hopefully it will be a source of motivation.

I like that it's designed for students to work during the graduate coursework. If I decide to pursue CRNA certification I could potentially obtain the acute care experience most programs require during this time.

I also feel like they've been really welcoming and friendly in all my interactions with faculty and students. They've had current ELMSN students call me to answer my questions and in general they've just left me feeling more comfortable with their program. SU I feel has been a little disorganized and less helpful. Probably due to the greater number of applicants. I attended a grad open house and didn't find it to be all that helpful as there weren't any current APNI students representing the program and the person who was couldn't answer many of my questions. I did listen to the info session mp3 that they used to have up on their website and that was informative and well done.

Location isn't a huge issue for me because I live in Seattle but have a place to stay in Tacoma during the week.

To me, the most appealing thing about SU is its commitment to producing nurses who work with those on the fringes of society and the healthcare system. The research experience of SU faculty in this area is impressive. Ultimately though I figure if I want to work with vulnerable populations I will despite the graduate program I attend.

I don't know if that helped at all but I found it strangely cathartic to write it all down. Lol. I think they're both great programs and likely you won't be disappointed with either. For myself, PLU just made more sense.

I wrote to SU to ensure they had my correct contact info. because I have yet to hear of any updates/notifications since January 25th. They responded with this:"At this point the College of Nursing has not selected you for an interview. If you are not selected at the end of their process you will receive your decision letter in the mail."Any way to interpret this? Seems vague to me.

I just had my in person interview this morning. I must've been the very first interview. I was nervous going in but they were very pleasant and I calmed down after the first few minutes. Good luck guys! Who is doing an in person interview and who opted for a phone interview?

To be honest, I didn't feel that any of the questions were particularly hard. Be able to articulate your reasoning for entering the nursing field. If you are truly passionate about becoming an NP and attending SU, you will not find the questions hard. You've already written personal statements so this should be a cake walk :)

I am going in person since I only live about 20 min drive from SU. I'll need all the luck I can get! I tend to get nervous during interviews. Hopefully my thoughts come out at least somewhat coherent ^_^
