RN student interested in becoming an NP, specializing in holistic health care.

Nursing Students NP Students

Published

I am an RN student, working on my associate's degree and I plan on starting my BSN while working after graduation. Eventually I would like to become a NP, specializing in preventative care using nutrition, exercise and herbal remedies. Are there any NP's out there in that field with any advice for me?

As an RN you'll already be doing 2:3 things you listed as wanting to do as an NP. I was always under the impression holistic healthcare was a theory of treating the mind, body, and spirit and not a treatment modality. The ONLY practitioners I know of that use herbal remedies are naturopathic doctors.

I hope more chime in on this as I'm curious if these type of NP's exist..

I'm a FNP at a holistic Family practice. Its referred to as functional medicine. We look at things on a cellular level and try to correct the root cause of the problem instead of treating symptoms. Its awesome! And I have learned sooo much about the endocrine system. ..nutrition ....amino acids....heavy metal poisoning...leaky gut...liver toxins...its truly amazing. A whole new world. Youtube functional medicine ...

What's difference between an MD & a DO?

Not a whole lot. Google it

DO's are a lil more holistic and they learn to manipulate the spine. They take the same medical classes as M.D's. Its a little bit of a different school of thought.

So why does JustanLPN's post seem to have a derisive sarcastic tone to it to me?

There's a pediatrician that admits to our hospital that I respect & think he's a good doctor. He has a DO.

I didn't take it that way :). I like DOs. The ones I work with are pretty good

Anybody who gets accepted to medical school, graduates, makes it through residency gets my respect. I meant nothing negative towards osteopaths. OMM is very interesting IMO.
