Hi everyone,

I am just wondering if you are all required to have a malpractice/liability insurance before your preceptor-ship or starting your clinical practice.

  1. If so, please can you give me a feedback to what organization you joined?
  2. How much do you pay per month? Is it biweekly or monthly payments?
  3. And, why did you choose that organization?

Pretty please.. any information is greatly appreciated, I would like to make an informed decision and narrow my search too.

Thank you all in advance. Have a wonderful day.:cat::up:

I have carried malpractice through NSO for YEARS! When I went back to school, I contacted them and they adjusted my coverage for student. Once I graduated, they continue the coverage. I don't remember the cost, but it was a yearly fee and not that bad. My renewal is coming up in 2 months and will see.

Thank you for the reply, appreciate it. I think NSO sounds good, most the people I've asked said they got it from NSO too.

I also use NSO. School insurance usually covers students so mine wasn't required, but I always have my own policy. I think it was a few hundred for the year. Also, it covers you for both being an NP student and working as an RN.

When I start doing clinicals, I'll go through NSO

You school will normally fully cover you during your preceptorship. You should maintain your RN coverage.

NSO and Mercer are the two most common malpractice providers for APNs. You cna get a discount on Mercer through AANP membership.

As a student it will vary by state but should be around $250-400/year.

Once you finish school, hopefully you will negotiate your employer paying your malpractice which is about $2000/year.
