I don't think I want to do FNP anymore?

I am in my first semester of FNP school at UAB. Advanced patho is taught by an instructor with ph.d. my other friends that are FNPs said their patho was much easier. This course is very challenging to me, but prior to getting in FNP I have always had a second thought about having the primary provider role. I really enjoy having my RN,BSN. I really think I made a mistake, but I am going try to tough out the semester, plus my parents don't want me to quit. It is really hard juggling school and full time job. Is that normal having second thoughts in 1st semester.

I am feeling the exact same way! I just started the first semester of the FNP program and not 100% sure I would like to do this. I am also working and trying to complete the post masters FNP in 1 year. I am confused, but glad to know I am not the only feeling this way.

Thank you for replying. Yes, I am the only nurse in my family, so nobody understands how much I am stressing about this decision. I don't want to have the fear of completing the program, but being unhappy in my practice.

Don't know if I want that type of responsibility now. Then on another note, some floor nurses are making more money working 3 12hr shifts with shift differential than FNP on salary!

What makes you think you will be unhappy as a FNP? The patho class?

I'm currently in a tough CRNA program, and every time I feel overwhelmed and like I'm drowning (with the exceptions of my stats class) I just have to tell myself to buck up and learn the info, because I'm going to use the information every. single. day. for the rest of my career.

If the patho class is boring to you, maybe FNP isn't for you. But if its just difficult, you CAN overcome and do well in the class in order to pursue your goals.

If you are already having second thoughts now is the time to re-evaluate before you spend a lot of money on something you don't want.

Getting into your program is no small feat , you are to be commended. I would not so quickly walk away or make a snap decision due to stress. Can you just drop and take this later from another instructor? Also cut back on your work if you can. I think it is normal to have second thoughts. Give it a chance. Good Luck

Just remember guys, the FNP is an advanced practice nurse. If you're considering it for the salary/money, don't go into FNP. People in need are coming to you, and you have more autonomy in directing their healthcare ... so please don't enter into this type of nursing profession because of salary.

Patho can be tough. I think working full-time and trying to find time to study is really hard. Can you cut down your hours at work? I wouldn't judge the NP role from a patho class. Do you think you'd be happier with another advanced practice specialty. I started in FNP and switched to PMHNP, which was my nursing area and I'm much happier. I'm at USA and my program is time consuming, but because I'm in an area that I enjoy and want to be in, it makes it much easier.

I think you need to step back and think about your career goals. What is your passion? Do you love bedside nursing or do you love the idea of being a healthcare provider? It sounds like you really love being a "RN, BSN" as you put it - so what's making you pursue the FNP?
