I currently work for the federal government where there is job security and good benefits but my current manager does not support my education/career goals, infact he is making things very hard for me I think. I used to work hours that enabled me to go to clinicals and attend classes w/o any problems now he has changed my hours, this is interfering with school I have 2 semesters to graduate with a MSN/FNP. I have been offered a weekend option position with a private hospital with an equally good pay..no unions though and I have to decide whether to take it or struggle at my federal job...Decision time and I need some advise on this... what will you guys do.. I need to have a job, not working is not an option.

Hi,

Boy does that sound all too familiar! You only have two semesters left in school, are you gonna mess that up?! Think about where you will be in a few months when you are done. I would take the other job and sacrifice just to graduate and complete your boards. That is the ultimate goal!!:yelclap: As for your manager, dont worry. You will be long gone and he or she will be inhaling your smoke. You are a threat now to your boss especially if your eduaction is higher than thiers. Sad to say in nursing but it is very true. Your almost out of the tunnel so keep pushing!!

Put in your notice, go to the other job. Do not mess up your last 2 semesters. If after graduation you choose to go back, at least you will still be in good standing.

Maybe you can stay PRN if that's an option

I agree with the other two comments. Go for the new job. 2 semesters will go by in a flash and you will be starting a whole new career. Congrats! I also say try to stay contingent at your current job though. Good luck!

Before you go, I would like you to consider if that would affect your retirement package with the government. Would you be able to keep the package and return to work for the governement if you graduate. I would hate for you to loose ur benefits. Can you transfer to another department int he mean time?

That is my biggest concern, I am in my late 30's and I now think about these things. Why people do these things to their colleagues I do not understand. Why can't we just be supportive of others in nursing??? I just do not get it. Thanks guys for your advice
