current OR nurse with previous Med-Surg experience

  1. 0 Good day! I am thinking about taking a post Master's Adult-Gero NP program, I have attained my MSN 5 years ago and I have been in the OR for almost 5 years now. Prior to that, I have had Med-surg experience. My question is, should I go back to Med-Surg when I start my NP program to assist in attaining the degree especially with the required clinicals???

    Thank you very much.

I would go back, but for a different reason than you might think. I find myself better suited to the NP role as the decision-maker/case manager for pts on the floor than in the OR. Of course, your clinical skills will definitely be sharpened, too. I did enjoy the OR, but more and more, it became more of a technician role, fixing machines and computers. However, you can learn much in the OR if you have doctors who allow you to question them, but I saw that list becoming smaller as time marched along. Good luck to you!
