Certification preparation for FNP

Hi everyone,

I'm starting an FNP program in the next few weeks and am new to the requirements. I was wondering if around the time of graduation, if students typically prepare for the FNP certification exam using Kaplan or other test prep programs? Do most employers require this certification before hiring someone as an NP? How much time does one typically spend preparing for the exam?

Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Hello fellow FNP student! As a current student I have wondered the same, from what I have came across is certification depends on the state and job. NP licenses are regulated state by state basis. Some states require certification where others do not, but the employer might require it. My suggestion is certify no matter what. As for prep programs, I am not familiar with and would like to know more about. I suggest making yourself more aware of NP practice and news by keeping up with the AANP or ANCP (both certification organizations) Times are changing too with who will be offering certification exams past 2015. Might I suggest these sites for ongoing info.

Within my nursing career I have found that my specialty certification has been respected and expressed to prospective employers I have gone the extra mile.

Thanks for your reply and the links! I agree that it's important to certify and stay competitive.

Found these links on the ANCC site which shows the content on the certification test for FNP. Offers practice questions free and others for purchase. I'm sure there are lots of test prep programs out there to help. Definitely getting ahead of myself with all of this but it does pay to know the certification process. Good luck with your studies!

Also, what equipment did you have to purchase for school? An otoscope or anything else?

Not sure on the equipment, I haven't started the practitioner clinicals yet just concept clinicals, but I know we had to have at least access to the equipment.
