Moving next August to the area and interested in the same info. How was the job search? And the starting pay? Any info greatly appreciated.

Hi! So I actually ended up taking a job with MUSC downtown instead of Trident. That hospital is overall way better than Trident. My starting pay was 25.92 an hour, and I get shift differential for working evenings. The job search here was actually pretty easy, I got calls for jobs days after putting in applications, and in the end really had my choice of where I wanted to work. Maybe it was luck, but it seems to me that this area is just easy for a nurse doing a job search! I'm currently living in North Charleston and commuting downtown, which only takes me 20 minutes. Rent is pretty expensive in all of the really nice areas, for a 2bdrm around 1100$ a month plus... with the average being around 1400$ for any of the islands, west ashley, or mt pleasant. It's tough in my opinion to find a fantastic place to live for a good price.. not used to that in Maine!!! Everywhere is "good".

New nurse that grew up in the area and did both of my bachelor degrees in downtown Charleston. Affordable housing can be found in any part of Charleston if you have time to hunt. I live in an older 3 bedroom house downtown for $1100/month. If you want a nicer place in a very safe neighborhood your best bets are North Mt Pleasant, West Ashley, North Charleston, Summerville or (if you really hunt) James Island. I work downtown and for me, being able to ride my bike to work and leave 15 minutes before my shift outweighs the $300ish in extra rent I pay by not living in North Charleston.

MUSC is the only hospital I've worked at but the consensus from my coworkers that have worked at other hospitals is that MUSC is the best. It's a teaching hospital so most md attitudes towards nurses are very understanding w/ a tendency to help you learn. The private hospital and VA just down the street pay better but the work environment isn't as good. Trident is a great place to start out but I don't know anybody that's moved to Roper or MUSC from Trident and not greatly enjoyed the change.

If anybody ends up working at Trident, it will be easier to access from the cheaper areas to live. Cheers and good luck!

Hey there, funny you say all of that.. I actually ended up moving not long after I posted this and I work at musc and live in Mt Pleasant! :-)

Really glad it worked out for you. I am currently in search of work in Charleston. Currently in Baltimore but looking to relocate family to Mt. Pleasant, SC. After many applications, Trident called. I really want to work at MUSC or Roper, but no responses yet. I have been a nurse for one year and AA degree - currently working on BSN. Any suggestions to getting response from MUSC? Little frustrated by lack of response. Glad to hear pay was over $25 - what level nurse are you and what type of degree? Again, congrats on landing job at MUSC.
