It's true. There are some pretty decent resourced out there for folks who are poor, but don't qualify for Medicaid. For example, in my county, we have what's called The Community Medical Mission, it's completely free clinic run by volunteer nurses and doctors. It meets on thursday nights and the only requirements are that you have to fall below a certain income level, not be covered by insurance, Medicaid or Medicare and you HAVE to be a resident of the my county. I'm a volunteer and a patient. We have only been open for about a year, we already have over 700 individual charts and we have barely advertised.
But, people fall through the cracks unfortunately. Free Clinics like Community Medical Mission are great at preventative and primary care but there is really not a whole lot we can do for someone suffering from cancer, for example, we don't have the resources.
