Having a pre-existing condition does not automatically exclude someone from obtaining health insurance through their employer.

Food and shelter can be obtained by an individual by their own means. One cannot "make their own health care", it just go an buy it in a store. It doesn't work that way.

Health care used to be affordable, and individuals could obtain it themselves. Then the insurance companies started to exlude people with re existing conditions", and this made health care unaffordable.

When insurance companies have to level the playing field, and compete with a Public Option, they will have to lower the cost and take everyone, without it being unaffordable. JMHO and my NY $0.02.

My point was:

What we really need is a system of employer and individual mandates to have everyone paying into the system.
Not a single word about taxes......

Mandates only favor the free loaders.

I really don't understand what you want CRNA2007 , you complain about freeloaders getting access to healthcare , then appear to say that mandating that everyone obtains health insurance , to cover the expense of their healthcare is a bad idea .

This America. You are free to make choices, even poor ones. Some people feel that they don't need health insurance (mostly young folks) and choose to go without it. Should they be mandated to buy it?

K98 I was not offering an opinion , regarding mandating health insurance . I was trying ( obviously poorly ) to show that CRNA2007 position was untenable in that he didn't appear to want healthcare to be voluntarily funded ( in which case some would not buy insurance ) or mandatory . So how the heck did he wish to fund healthcare ?

I am not against reforming healthcare. That said, if the government has any involvement in it, it will be a mess. The president pointed to government-run healthcare (Medicare) as having enough waste and fraud to fund the new federal plan (whatever it is). I believe he made a strong case for keeping government OUT of healthcare. If there is truly enough waste in the present federal healthcare plan to fund another federal healthcare plan, there are some serious flaws in the system.

Private insurance has even more waste.

You obviously have never been a government employee. I have. There is NO way any private entity could waste resources (cash) like the government. Business is in business to make a profit. Government does not have to make a profit. When they make bad decisions or waste money, they just dig deeper into YOUR pockets.
