brand name when govt insurnance pays?

Correct me if I am wrong but isnt this wasteful?:

A doctor prescribes a brand name drug when the generic is availalble. The patient pays a minimal amount because medicare and a military insurance pays the rest. The govt, aka tax payers are then footing the bill for an overly expensive drug. Isnt that wastful?

And how do you react as a caregiver? Is it appropriate to point this out? Can we say something like: Maybe you could ask your doctor if a generic is equivalent. Its so tempting-helping to cut waste in a very wasteful healthcare system. But is it our place, is it appropriate?

If all you see is the small price you pay its easy not to want to cut costs and ask for the cheaper brand.

My BCBS benefits require use of a generic....(I am a federal employee.) The other piece of this is that DOD/VA patients already receive substantial discounts for group purchase of medications...

I do agree that we can teach cost control strategies to our patients....

There may be a specific reason why the physician is writing for the name-brand medication in this particular instance -- not all generics work well for all people, and sometimes there is a legitimate reason to go with the proprietary form of the med.

However, yes, there is also a lot of the "well, the government's paying for it so the price doesn't matter" mentality out there, and there's nothing wrong with asking about less expensive options. If everyone were mindful of this, we'd all be better off.
