"Recommended for you" pop up

  1. 12
This is a box that pops up in the lower right corner of my screen as I scroll down. It usually is "recommending" something that I have no desire to read, no interest in, and I am baffled as to how it decides what is "recommended". Also, it blocks the "top" button so there is no way to quickly return to the top of the page (my keyboard no longer has a home button, alas - that used to be my BFF).

Is there any way to make this annoying box disappear? Or is this another "improvement" that is non-optional?

Something we are trialing and should only pop up for a few seconds then drop back down

It does not go away. I agree, it is annoying. Also, the "clock" that used to bring up older posts is gone. There is no way to access "last 24" or "last 30 days". This is driving me whacko, to the point where I can no longer visit. Please guide me in the right direction. I can access "all" but it only brings up new posts. Very frustrating. : (

Yes there is a way for the last 24 hours. go to the AN main page....hover over the "what's new" icon/tab it will show 3 more tabs one of them is "get daily" for the last 24 hours. These tabs are on the main page of every forum. What's new is the last few days posting I am unsure if it is the whole 30 days but it might be.

The pop up...I haven't decided it I like it but there is a arrow where you can click hide in the upper right hand corner of the pop up

Right now there is a "Recommended for you..." pop ups that is stuck at the bottom of the page and it won't. go. away. (OK, now that I wrote that, it went away, but it was stuck there for several minutes, even when I tried to click on it). No one who knows me would suggest the OB forums to read. I've never had a whit of interest in OB.

May I chime in with total agreement as to how annoying that box is? Ugh. At least make it optional.

it's part of our content discovery initiative to increase user engagement across the site

so far it's successful ... people are using it

the titles that you see are based on how "viral" each title is ... it's based on number of shares (social buttons), clicks, speed of shares/clicks, etc ...

the titles will change as the days go by ... the system is learning

So the same articles that are already being promoted and available by the Liked/Replied box at the top right of each page? Why? And why brand it as "recommended for you" instead of "trending on AN" or "most popular pages"?

When users have made it clear that things popping up on the side are not wanted - such as the social networking links that you have so recently made optional - why would you then add another element with the exact same annoyance?

For this "content discovery initiative" - have you conducted any research as to what the users want to see changed about the site, and/or what would encourage them to be more active? Or are you just making random guesses? Instead of site-wide roll outs for new changes, do you have a way of beta-testing these changes with a small group of users, to get feedback on usefulness and find bugs? You know nurses - we're big on EBP! :-)

And yeah, I'm sure people are clicking on it - I've clicked on it too, but only to try and make it go away!

(I can also verify that it does not pop up and then go away - unless I manually scroll back up towards the top of the page.)

I hadn't seen an arrow before, but once you posted this I looked closer: no arrow to hide it. Until I hovered over it, then a down arrow appeared (I don't know if this is unique to Macs, I am a new Mac user). However, once I leave that page the pop-up appears again! So I have to click to hide it every single time I change pages?
