  1. IV starts in nursing schools
We did them in the 3rd semester of my ADN program. We started on fake arms, then our check-off was on another student. After that, we were allowed to do them in clinical for the remainder of the...

  2. Kaiser RN assessment test
When I took it, it immediately told me I met the requirements so my info was forwarded to the manager. I asked the recruiter and she told me the test was good for one year, if I applied for any...

  3. Are there 10 hr shifts in Nursing??
I'm in L&D and there are several nurses who work 10's. They are "old" positions that are no longer available; once they leave or retire the position will no longer exist. I am actually a little...

  4. Labor and Delivery nurses: can you scrub?
I was taught as part of my orientation. There are other nurses that love to do it and there are scrub techs, so I have only been used a few times. Which is fine by me, I'm not a fan of the OR!

  5. Do you mix your own pit?
Premixed 30u/500ml bag. I don't know about mixing our own since I've never had that issue. It's always well stocked on our floor.

  6. CA Bay Area L&D Salary Question
I work at an East Bay hospital, as do my friends at several others. There is no negotiating salary; you are given a set amount based on level of experience/degree/shift. Congrats on the job :)

  7. How often do you give Morphine 4mg SUBCUT to a L&D mom?
Agree with above. PCN 5mill for initial dose for GBS+ mom and we "sleep" patients with Morphine but we also keep them overnight (I work NOC) to monitor them. We give it IM.

  8. perdiem and hounded everyday to work
I'm in the same position. I choose to work 2-3 shifts a week and that's specifically why I wanted a per diem position. I will get called daily whether it's 0130, 0500, 1300, or 2300...I hate...

  9. Do you always keep emergency meds on hand for deliveries?
That's true, no Hemabate for asthma patients and no Methergine for hypertension. That's one of the first things I learned when I started as a new grad last in l&d last year. Luckily, I have only...

  10. Do you always keep emergency meds on hand for deliveries?
We bolus every patient with pitocin following delivery. If they are at any increased risk for PPH, we will usually have either Hemabate or Methergine at the bedside.

  11. Want to be L&D rn but hate the OR?
I started in L&D as a new grad last year and trained on PMs and then switched to nights. Because of that, I didn't have much experience in the OR due to the calm, scheduled c/s happening during day...

L&D is all I ever wanted to do and all I ever plan to do. It was the reason I went to nursing school and I was lucky enough to get hired as a new grad. I don't feel like I'm lacking by not having...

  14. How do people interact on an LD unit
We don't have CNAs on our unit. We do have OB techs that scrub, make up delivery tables, stock rooms, help make charts, run specimens down to lab, etc. They don't really have much patient...

I asked the patient what she was naming her daughter and she said "Honesty" but it was spelled Ah'nahstee. I told her to be prepared to spell that name out for the rest of her life :/
