  1. Would you deliver your baby at your place of employment?
I won't have much choice. I work in NICU, but our NICU is attached to the L&D/PP unit, so I'm familiar with the L&D nurses. The idea doesn't bother me too much, I suppose.

  2. (Not so) Daily Affirmations
Congratulations, Bortaz. I've been keeping up with your posts--the environment you've been describing sounds truly awful. It's a shame it's forcing you to move away from NICU, but here's hoping that...

  3. What constitutes "comfort care" at your hospital?
Vitals only prn (at family's request), no labs, no routine meds, O2 as needed for comfort, hourly or q2hr pain/anxiolytics, scopalamine patch as needed, ok to leave foley in (if it was already...

  4. How often are you called off?
Sometimes we will go months with no loss days, sometimes we can get a loss day once a week. Our census is rather..variable

  5. Med/Surg to NICU RN
I went from medical to NICU. I do miss my adult patients but I get a decent amount of interaction with the parents, which keeps me satisfied. How is your orientation going otherwise? Is there...

We only have 3 giraffes where the top even has the option to be 'popped'. We don't usually pop the top, with the exception of some procedures

  8. Bar Code Medication Administration NICU Style
Our babies are banded and technically you are supposed to scan their band, but usually we just either scan their chart or a sticker we put on our brain sheet. Most of our medications we have to have...

Neonatal stroke? Seriously? Haven't heard of VACTERL before, glad this little one is getting better :)

  11. Am I the only one who hates 12 hour shifts??
I work 8 hour nights and I love it. We usually only do 4shifts/week, but depending on the unit, you may end up doing 5 or 6 in a row to get 3-5 off in a row. I love that I can still see my husband in...

  12. The lowest O2 saturation I've ever seen
That's the same for me, TiffyRN. It's been a huge adjustment watching nurses not even bat an eye at 76%, but go mildly nuts for a 97.1 degree temp. On medical, we didn't care too much about lower...

  13. How to get over hospital fears
IVs gave me the heebie-jeebies before I started working as a nurse. For me, constant exposure dulled the 'weirdness' of them.

  14. The "Q" Word and Other Mysteries
I'm not particularly superstitious, but it's fun to play along. I usually don't say the "Q" word--I describe the night as "respectable". We used to have a frequent flier who we would just refer...

  16. I don't want to work in LTC... Will someone change my attitude?
No one can change your attitude but you. As Fiona59 said, there is no dream job anymore. But, starting in LTC doesn't guarantee that you have to stay in LTC for the rest of your career. On my old...

  17. As seen on Reddit: Live-streaming camera in a NICU
http://www.saintpetershcs.com/Our-Services/NICU/NICView/ Apparently, parents get a log-in and password to have access to 24/7 live-streaming video of their infant. The camera is only turned off...

I have a Littman Master Classic--not as pricy as the cardiology lines, but more sensitive, to me, than the Classic II SE. But the Littman Cardiology line is probably your best bet for best hearing.

  21. How do you handle the rest of your assignment during a code?
Usually, the rest of the nurses on the floor would pitch in and help--either they would put in orders for you for the code, take over recording, answer call lights, pass prn meds, ect. We had a good...

  22. What is the maximum number of patients per nurse?
On night shift, we could either take up to 13 (rare, 10 was typically the max) as part of an RN + LPN team, or up to 6 (also rare, but becoming increasingly common, with the 6th being an admit...

We had pins we were supposed to wear promoting our facility. They ended up all stuck to the ceiling of our report room. You can still see the occasional one in the ceiling.
