The focus of Western Governors University (WGU) is on the student. Programs are competency-based for students to become experts in their field. All programs through Western Governors University are accredited.

The Competency-Based Approach

At Western Governors University the student is taught through online and competency-based learning.

“What does this mean … online and competency-based learning?”

There are no traditional classrooms.  You already know the concept because of your prior education and experience and can complete your assessments easier because you have control over your own education.

Online Classroom with Intense Clinical

Competency through Western Governors University is based on online learning and intensive clinical rotations to solidify your learning. Clinicals are conducted through simulations in the Clinical Simulation Learning Lab.

Innovative Learning Through Clinical Education

State of the art simulations include virtual reality and high fidelity simulations to develop and enhance clinical skills.  The student will rotate through agency-based clinical sites throughout the hospitals and other clinical facilities.

Each student will be assigned an experienced Staff Nurse who will serve as a clinical coach.  This highly skilled and knowledgeable clinical nurse will mentor, supervise and support the student during their clinical site rotation.

There will be requirements throughout the course to complete multiple clinical rotations each year, both in-hospital and community-based.  Some programs have a minimum requirement which includes at least 90 hours of clinical experience in a university-approved and qualified community health setting.

    My Experience

I'm very happy with WGU - completed my BSN through them, now working on a MSN-Ed. I've managed to balance school, work, and a personal life.

    About The Staff

My student mentors have meant the world to me. My BSN mentor saw me through the loss of my husband, and all the changes that came after that. She was truly supportive and inspirational. She made the difference between my ability to complete my degree, and failure.

    My Experience

I wish I had known about WGU for my RN to BSN but am thankful I found out for my BSN to MSN. Not having to live by a structured course timeline or silly discussion posts puts WGU high up above most other online schools...along with being a fully accredited and non-profit school that provides a well rounded education at an affordable price with letting the student maintain autonomy on their coursework. The only frustration I have had (and minimal at that) has been not being clear on a few of the rubrics expectations. I work nights so it can be a challenge to try and reach out to staff to clarify at 4 am :-).

    About The Staff

So far, and I almost done with my degree mind you, I have only come across extremely polite, helpful, and caring staff. My student mentor is one in a million and my course mentors have been great as well.

    Things To Know

    Thank you WGU!!!

Good quality, affordable education. Classes concentrate on what you need to know as a nurse and not the fluff around it.

    About The Staff

Mentors are supportive and attentive. Never have I had to wait long for an answer to a question in any department.

I had a great experience getting my BSN, so I went on to get my MSN.The classes are very intuitive and I like that you work at your own pace and can compete as many classes as you can within the 6 month period. This allows you to get more for your money.

    About The Staff

The staff check in on a regular basis and promptly respond to emails. You can make appointments for phone advice. They are very accessible, knowledgeable, and helpful.

    My Experience

I love WGU! I have three degrees from WGU - BSN, MSN, and MBA. All were completed in one term each, but realize that this is not typical.
Classes can be completed at your pace and for the most part there are no group projects and thankfully no required discussion boards or required class times.

    About The Staff

I have been lucky - all three of my student mentors have been awesome! Course mentors are also very helpful when needed.

    Things To Know

You do need to be working to go to WGU (at least for nursing) and yes, the school is pass/fail which equates to a 3.0. If this is not a problem for you, this is the place to be.

I am both a two-time grad AND a current faculty member.

    About The Staff

I wish to correct a previous review. Taskstream does NOT utilize 'third-party' evaluators. Every evaluator is a full WGU faculty member, all have a minimum of Master's degree (many have doctorate), all are in the US.

    My Experience

I am finishing the RN to MSN program and am very happy with my experience at WGU.

    About The Staff

My student mentor is wonderful. One or two course mentors have been unhelpful, but overall I have gotten what I needed from them.

    Things To Know

I highly recommend WGU for the following reasons:
    - The program is very flexible
    - There is no group coursework or required postings on blackboard
    - The quality is great - you do come out with a very good education
    - Inexpensive
    - Competency-based learning allows you to progress at your own pace
The one caveat I have is that you must be very self-motivated and self-disciplined to be successful at WGU. If you require a fair amount of structure and need hard deadlines, then WGU would not be the right program for you.

    My Experience

I attend WGU Texas Pre-licensure nursing program.

WGU is constantly changing to improve the program which I appreciate, they are raising their standard. My tuition stayed the same throughout my program. The program is do-able and flexible for the working adult. Failure was not the end with WGU they gave me the tools I needed to succeed and pass exams. Everything was not perfect but I am overall satisfied with the program.

Course Materials-books and learning resources are included in the tuition but are available online only.

Courses are scored using a pass or fail scale. Some courses require an objective assessment(s), others require a performance assessment and some courses require both. Performance assessments are written essays called tasks. Task are graded using Taskstream (3rd party graders). Most courses have only one objective assessment in the form of an ATI test, WGU exam, or simulation lab exam. WGU exams can be taken at home using Proctor U and can be scheduled at any time, very convenient for the working adult. ATI exams must be taken at a testing center. There are a variety of testing center locations and each center has their own hours. There are cut scores for objective exams usually in the level 2 range.

Simulation Lab- Labs are held on weekends Saturday and Sunday from 8 am-5pm. At the time I attended we used a local universities labs and mannequins for practice and lab exams. You must purchase the required lab kit from a 3rd party, not included in the tuition. Labs are usually held every other month for courses that require clinical skills
Clinicals - Depending on your cohort your hospital will be chosen and will remain the same for most clinical courses. During my time we had to go elsewhere for peds and psych because the hospital did not have those units.

    About The Staff

WGU assigns you both a course mentor (instructor) and a student mentor (like an academic counselor). You will also have clinical instructors, clinical coaches, and lab instructors Student mentors- stick with you throughout your time at the university and approves your degree plan each term. Student mentor are there to offer support and help you reach your goals. Contact with your student mentor is a requirement for the pre-licensure program, every two weeks. Call times vary anywhere from 5 min or if you have much to chat about an hour. Course mentors- Some course mentors are helpful and some you may never hear from. Your choice if you'd like to reach out to them for additional help, they have good response time. You can also schedule phone conferences with them or chat via email. If you fail a performance exam you must speak with your course mentor and will have to complete a remediation plan (additional quizzes and readings located in your course of study). I have never attended or heard of course mentors hosting conferences or providing additional help such as power points but from maybe one instructor and that was for the more critical courses. I sometimes wished these were available to feel more connected, gain a better insight about the material covered in the courses, more ask questions, and hear from other students. Other staff available include student services I reached out to them for test anxiety and help to balance my work, school life, and mommy duties. The help is there you just have to reach out and demand the help. The program director is also very down to earth and chats with students via email and phone for any reason! Even just for a pick me up! Lab instructors- they go over lab assignments which are to be completed before attending and required readings. The lab instructors prepare you for your lab exams and clinicals. I liked that I was able to ask questions in reference to the material I read and be in a classroom setting. This time was critical to my learning and the instructors were always helpful. During clinical you have a and clinical instructor (from WGU who visits you maybe once or twice during your rotation.) You also have and a clinical coach (preceptor) employed by the hospital and works with WGU. You work one on one with your clinical coach and she will complete a skills check off and provide comments about your progression on a weekly basis. Some coaches are better than others some are burnt out and you can tell! Over all great experience during clinical I loved working with the nurses and staff during my clinical rotation.
