In 1971, Excelsior College was founded by the New York State Board of Regents. Before the name Excelsior College, it was Regents College.

The Board of Regents, in 1998,  granted the College a charter to operate as a private, nonprofit, independent institution. On January 1, 2001, Regents College changed its name to Excelsior College.

About Excelsior Nursing Programs

Our nursing degree programs are designed specifically for individuals with experience in clinical health care related disciplines.

Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) and Associate of Applied Science in Nursing

The Excelsior College School of Nursing offers an Associate of Science in Nursing program for healthcare professionals who would like to become a Registered Nurse (RN). This program is an exam based program ideal for those who have experience as an LPNs, LVNs, paramedics, or military corpsmen.

Required Documentation for admission (though not all inclusive)

  1. TEAS score report from ATI completed no more than one year prior to the date of your application.
  2. Completed Verification of Healthcare Experience form including your supervisor's signature.
  3. Must be employed in a setting that requires direct patient care and completed at least 200 hours of employment in this practice setting within the calendar year prior to signing this form.
  4. A copy of a current license or certification to verify professional status in an appropriate health care profession.
  5. If you reside in a state with additional licensure requirements you must complete and submit a Pre-Admission State Board Form. This form includes an acknowledgement that you understand the additional requirements for the state where you currently reside and/or where you plan to apply for RN licensure.

The associate-degree level program at Excelsior is a competency-based program for those who are learning at a distance. The students are prohibited from performing many clinical activities at their place of employment.  However, students who are on campus are able to engage at their place of employment because they are covered under an exempt clause in the Nurse Practice Act. This clause allows them to perform patient care under faculty supervision. The only time students who do not hold a registered nurse license are able to perform patient care is during the actual administration of the Clinical Performance in Nursing Examination. Therefore, if the student holds an RN license and are advancing their studies to pursue bachelor's or master's degrees in nursing at Excelsior College they may work within the scope of their license while engaging in educational endeavors.

Students who do not have healthcare experience under the admission requirements are advised to attend an instructional program to gather hands on demonstration. There is no clinical instruction in any of the Excelsior nursing programs.

RN-BSN

The RN-BSN degree at Excelsior College is flexible for the current Registered nurse to advance his or her studies to the bachelor’s degree.

To be eligible, the nurse much hold a current and active U.S. RN license or the international equivalent as verified by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools.

RN to Master of Science in Nursing

  • RN to Master of Science in Nursing (Nursing Leadership and Administration of Health Care Systems)
  • RN to Master of Science in Nursing (Nursing Education)
  • RN to Master of Science in Nursing (Nursing Informatics)

The RN to MSN program is for students who want to excel at their studies at an advanced degree level. The three tracks, Nursing leadership and Administration of Healthcare Systems, Nursing education, and Nursing Informatics are available. The student will be awarded both degrees at the completion of the program.

Accreditation and Awards

The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Inc. (ACEN) accredited all the nursing degree programs.

The National League for Nursing (NLN) awarded Excelsior School of Nursing as a 2016-2021 NLN Center of Excellence in Nursing Education.

    My Experience

Like any program, you get out of it what you put into it. The MSN-Leadership was broad based and, especially in phase 2, truly expanded my knowledge base. I am in the last class before Capstone and have appreciated the experience.

    About The Staff

On the whole the staff is GREAT, as to be expected I didn't mesh well with every student or instructor, but everyone was professional and helpful.

    My Experience

I enrolled into the LPN to RN program. I "tested" out of all of the classes, meaning, I studied on my own and then went to a testing center to take the final in order to get credit for the class. Working FT and being a mom, this fit into my hectic schedule. Excelsior has the "CPNE" which is how they sign you off on clinicals. A weekend away at a hospital that participates and you have to show off your skills. Very stressful and very expensive. If you fail 3x, you're out of the program.

    About The Staff

I didn't have much interaction with the staff. The testers at the CPNE were all wonderful. I didn't have a dedicated advisor which I didn't like.

    Things To Know

I would recommend a traditional nursing program if you're able to go that route but Excelsior worked for me because I was unable to quit my FT job to go back to school. Be prepared for hidden costs/fees. The wait time for the CPNE is up to a year which can be really frustrating.

    My Experience

The key to success was following instructions and reading the Excelsior materials carefully. For one class I tried a publishing company's materials, and they were not as enjoyable or effective as Excelsior's materials. There were many options available to fulfill educational requirements.

    About The Staff

My advisors were excellent. They directed me to interesting and low cost options to meet academic requirements. There advice regarding the professional experience requirements was spot on.

    Things To Know

There was a focus on community health, teaching and cultural competency.

    My Experience

In their advertised reviews of what others are reviewing, about them, the scores are far below a passing grade! If you can't do basic math then go no further. When I attended this College (a real college offers classes, this place did not. But they make you think they are by billing you and delaying exam dates so you enter into a new enrollment fee, you have no idea. They are very clever!

    About The Staff

The staff. This depends for example, the examiners (all of them during my experiences) were the most unethical I have experienced in my lifetime perhaps more like out of a horror movie. Intentionally burn your time to lead you to failure. The other staff that seemed to assist me were only two (2).

    Things To Know

No matter how busy you are, if you are in a nursing program, I strongly advise you to attend your community college. Several community colleges in my area (and many areas) will not accept Excelsior College credits. This is a Huge RED FLAG. The community Colleges in my state WILL accept each other's credits. With that said, please do consider all the work you will do and what it will be worth (zero) outside of Excelsior. This place cost me about $25,000.00 in tuition, books and workshops, uniforms, etc., in addition to 4 exams with travel and hotel adding up to a whopping $25 grand. Other students have bills in the $30 grand area but once in this trap, there's no getting out. Advice? Don't be a Fool, enroll in your local state school.

    My Experience

I am in the ADN program. Excelsior requires all core non-nursing courses to be completed as a prerequisite to the nursing component. I am almost done with the prerequisites. I'm an LPN and it has been almost 20 years since I was in school, I was really scared and wondered if I could do it. Excelsior has provided a ton of support, it has been a really good experience so far. I highly recommend the class option.

    About The Staff

Instructors have been great. Very accessible and open to helping in any way they can, including direction to abundant resources included with tuition.

    My Experience

At one time I recommended the LPN/LVN to RN option to colleagues, fellow students, and friends as a desirable option, but my own experience eventually turned sour. Now, I am very careful to include practical caveats to anyone who inquires about the program.

    About The Staff

Not all staff that work at the CPNE sites are non-judgmental or equally experienced and competent in their roles. One of my evaluators engaged in an episode of blatant emotional jeopardy to the patient. I reported it. When I had to retake the CPNE, "magically" my second experience made it necessary for another Excelsior employee to dog my every move. Of course I should not have been rattled, but I never expected that Excelsior would go to such lengths to justify failing a student after taking so much of their money. Since then, have read on independent rating sites that it is not uncommon for Excelsior to send along a second employee when testing certain students for the CPNE.

    Things To Know

Only recommend this program as a last resort.

    My Experience

I completed the paramedic to RN program for my ASN. This is a great route for qualified applicants (paramedics, LPNs/LVNs, and some military medical personnel) to bridge to RN. I later came back to Excelsior College for the MSN in Nursing Informatics program. Had an excellent experience! Not an easy program, requires substantial work. I do not love group projects, but found that faculty are not in the habit of punishing the entire group for one group member's lack of input or availability.

    About The Staff

I have found over the years that staff and faculty truly care about student success.

    Things To Know

Extremely flexible with military students, very understanding about deployment cycles and the school does everything possible to support its military students during times of uncertainty.

    My Experience

Attended RN-MSN Education & graduated in 2009 well prepared to teach. Did not like the required on campus seminar as the travel, hotel, & time off expenses were excessive. Many students obtained A's on group projects w/ minimal, if any, contribution.

    About The Staff

Excellent faculty that care that students succeed. Academic advisors remain interested & attend the on campus seminar.
