Question on Vision Screenings

Hello,
When we do our vision screenings- how many letters/symbols on a line can a student get wrong to fail? Or rather how many to get right in order to pass? :P I am very technical and I need to know the exact details of everything! This is my first year as a school nurse so please help! I tried looking it up in the Titmus manual but didnt find the answer. I am actually going to just use good ole Snellen for older kids and picture box for kindergarten.
Thanks!!!!!

Congrats!! Where I work, the kids can only miss ONE letter and still pass. If they miss two they move up to the next line.

OK that is what I was thinking. Miss 1 and pass, miss 2 fail that line. I gotta remind myself it is only a "screening" and not a comprehensive eye exam :P

Nurse Re: Question on Vision Screenings
Thank you MelissaJaneRN for asking this question. I am also a new school nurse and was wondering about the pass/fail standards.

I was wondering at what result would you suggest a student seek a further evaluation? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to school nursing!!!

I have worked as a school nurse in 4 states and in every one you needed to pass that state's vision and hearing certification in order to conduct this screening. The rationale: the implications of doing it incorrectly are horrendous and are long term for the vision impaired student.

If your state has a school nurse consultant contact them immediately to find out about the trainings scheduled. Look up theie information on ths website:

If your state does not have a consultant, contact your State Board of Education.
