Mass vaccinations at schools ??

by Praiser

I just found out that my school corporation will be giving mass vaccinations to our students. Permission forms to go out today. Are any of you doing this ? How did it go? Any tips or pointers you can mention would be appreciated ! Thank you in advance !

This actually used to be done pretty routinely in the late 1960s-early 1970s. They lined us up in the gym/cafeteria, with our permission slips and shot cards.

I would think that this would be unnecessary, since students are required to be vaccinated before starting school.

NYC is currently doing mass vaccinations right now!!! There is a non-patient specific standing order for both routes of H1N1 (Intranasal and Injectable)
Small school <400 enrollment -School Nurse Vaccinator only (Recommended 2 hr AM sessions&1 hr PM prn)Oct 28-Nov 2
Medium School 400-600 -School Nurse & contract agency nurse(2 Vaccinators) Nov 4-6
Large School>600 enrollment -Mobile Vaccination Team -Nov 9-
1 DOHMH Team Leader
4 Contract Agency Nurses
4 Support Staff
A minimum of 2 school support staff is provided to assist the school nurse in conducting vasccination sessions.

All Staff attended Vaccination Team training session. Consent forms were sent home last week and each principal was to assign a staff person to collect and count forms and divide by class. These numbers were called in to the OSH Office of School Health so they had a count for # of vaccines needed.
So far it is working. I will keep you updated!!
Private elementary principals could opt in to the program and all JHS and HS students are given preferential access at POD (point of dispensing) sites at weekend clinics. All info is on nyc.gov/flu website for anyone to access!!!

Well I said I would keep you updated and yesterday a student whose parent had not given consent for in school vaccination received one. As per NY Daily News, student is on epilepsy meds and Mom was waited to ask MD if daughter should take the shot. The nurse sent for a student and the teacher sent the wrong student. The nurse did not ask the child's name and gave her the shot. When the mother was called and arrived at school she stated to the reporter that the nurse tried to get her to sign the consent.
Another student was vaccinated accidently as well at a different school. A total of 1800 students have been vaccinated as of yesterday.

Just curious, are you doing the nasal or injected vaccines? We are not doing them in our district, but if we were I am not sure how I would feel about doing the injectable myself. I work hard to get the kids to trust me, especially those suspicious of medical people in general, and I would hate to lose that trust because I gave them a shot I would not mind doing the nasal, and if asked I would do the injectable too, but I would be worried that it might impact my relationship with the kids. Any thoughts, Praiser?

Which form of vaccine to give is determined by a qick questionaire to see if child is a candidate for the nasal one. this is the preferred method as it seems to be less traumatic.

Just recieved memo yesterday that we should be giving them around the last week in November. Final meeting on this is Nov. 5. I'm not sure that it will help since it is already in full swing here. I do not want my kids to take it and I am not sure about taking it myself.
