I'm PugMomRn from WI. Been a school nurse for 2 1/2 years-- this board was a LIFELINE for me when I started!! It's been a rough start to the school year-- the district's computers have been up and down in various stages since right before school started *arg*. Hopefully now that things are calming down, I can jump in more often!
I'm in a suburban district, K4-8th grade, around 1500 students with Just Me and a few great volunteers. (WI is 41st in the nation for the school nurse ratios!!)

Hi all!
I have been a school nurse for exactly 3 days! I work at two elementary schools in Texas. I'm a little overwhelmed because I don't know where I'm suppose to start and I haven't had any orientation so I'm not sure even how to! lol However, that being said I can already tell I'm going to like this much better than previous jobs in the hospital. A got to take a lunch break all three days so far!! lol The kids and teachers were so excited to see me. Some people hugged me and I was announced to the kids and they cheered and literally gave me a " hip, hip, hooray" I mean, seriously? You can't beat that! ha! I can't ever imagine that happening on Step down or Tele floors! I already feel appreciated. I'm really excited about my new career in school nursing!

Hello everyone,

I am "momoftwins" and I will be starting a school nurse position at a middle school on Monday. I am so excited and nervous at the same time. If anyone has any advice I would love to hear from you. I was told that I will pretty much be working on my own (no training or observing). Please let me know of any resources that would be beneficial for me. I will also be reading these threads. Wish me luck!

Hi Everyone,

I am missmykids, I have been a school nurse for 11 years....8 years in my country,Philippines and 3 years here in Phoenix. My district is small and every school have their own school nurse. I love being a school nurse because I love taking care of my kiddos even if I have a lot of frequent flyers.

Hi! I am in southern Maine. I started out working at Children's in Boston, lots of VNA and now 14 years of school nursing. Two years ago I moved from elementary to middle school. I am lucky to be able to work fulltime in one school with 550 students.

I am brand new on the forum although I have been following it for over a year and it has been so helpful knowing there are other school nurses out there with daily struggles. I am a second year school nurse for a large elementary school in Dallas, Tx. Before becoming a school nurse, I worked in Med/Surg in the hospital for 14 years. The hospital experience has been of invaluable help. My school is primarily poor Hispanic. I have Pre-K to 6th grade. I love what I do but work long hours due to a large school population and many medically fragile students. Our school has the largest number of asmatics and SpEd students in our district. This year they have given me some help. 2days a week there is a second RN that comes and one day a week I have a Nurse Assistant. There will be no nurse screeners this year. We will be doing all our own screenings. Even with the help, it seems that there is still not enough hours in the day. Clinic traffic is usually 30-60 a day. But one day this week, we only had 5. That was very strange.
