What you wish you could say to the staff at your school

Here are my most current vents:

1) My office is not your personal phone booth. I realize the main office is noisy, but that is not my problem. Please find another place for your personal calls. I do not care to hear your personal drama.

2) Seriously, did you bathe in perfume this morning. I smelled you coming into the office before I saw you. Do you not realize we have students and staff for whom this is a trigger for asthma and migraines (myself included)? Do you care?

3) I have already checked your student out. There is no medical reason to send them home. I have spoken to their parents who agree they need to remain in school. If they are still complaining and disrupting the class, perhaps it's time to employ some classroom management techniques and treat this as the behavioral problem that it is, instead of the medical problem that it is NOT!

That's it for now. I am sure more will be forthcoming. What do you wish you could say to the teachers, staff, and admin that you work with?

Ah yes........* Why did you send a student up who had an "accident", and you sent his clean clothes with him? Is my bathroom more special than your bathroom? *Oh yes, the broken sandal. I didn't go to cobbler's school. Or eyeglass repair school. Or clean do-doo off sneakers school...*Really now. A cut so tiny I couldn't see it unless I looked under the magnifying lamp??? Did I not give you bandaids??*Oh, and the ones who didn't take their ADHD medication, and now they're acting up? I know you want me to keep them here until Mom/Dad/other brings the meds (and who knows when that will be), but guess what? I've got sick kids here, and you're going to have to deal with it*Please - if a child complains of a toothache, ask if his tooth is loose before sending to clinic. Do you know how many kids I've sent back because of that?I could go on and on, but I'm tired.............:nurse:mc3
I had a nice little giggle at this ! Well said mc3! I would like to add these-1. No, i do not need to know that johnny got a papercut last week but it WOULD be nice to know that Susie was wheeled in this morning with a full body cast on! 2. It would also be nice to know that the kid you have sent down every day for 2 weeks - his dad just went to prison.3. You know, there is also 2 counselors on staff that could deal with crying / upset students. Hmmmm......one of me!4. I would love to tell them that it must be nice to arrive 30 minutes later than me, get a planning period, get a duty free lunch.5. After the last few weeks that i have had i really want to tell them.......something inappropriate that i cannot post!

So how many of you get an actual break for lunch and how many work through lunch everyday? The nurse I've been talking with says because the lunch is considered paid lunch, you work through it. You have to bring your lunch and keep it in the little fridge in the office because you can't leave. Even if you're trying to eat, you still have to deal with students coming in. I understand why they'd have to do it like that, but it's definitely less than ideal...

I am "supposed" to get a 45 minute lunch break. I started in September, and have never, ever taken a real lunch. I just eat at my desk, little bits at a time, in between students and staff coming in. Once, I went to the staff room to microwave a Lean Cuisine (for 6 minutes). The office actually called the staff room phone, looking for me, because a student needed a bandaid. I personally feel like it is "quietly frowned upon" for the nurse to take a legitimate break. I guess we aren't supposed to reveal that we have any human bodily needs... ;)

I get a 30 min unpaid lunch. Up until 2 weeks ago I never left my room for it and saw kids during the entire time. Now I started taking a walk outside just right around the building. I put a sign on my door that says "come back in 30 minutes or go to the front desk if urgent". If it's urgent the front desk has my cell# to call me back in. So far I have not been interrupted once and all of the office staff administration encourages me to get out each day. The Vitamin D is an added bonus and I feel so much better afterwards. If you are not paid you should try to find a way to get out if only for 15 minutes.

My latest gripe:

There is nothing I can do about mosquito bites. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Please stop sending them to me multiple times daily. As I had told you 2,739 times, I can only use products and supplies that are district approved and supplied on the students, and the district does not supply anything for itch. Hence, nothing I can do. I have recommended you send them to the restroom to put cool water on it, and for you to discourage them from scratching. There is NOTHING ELSE I CAN DO!!!!! You are wasting my time and the student's learning time. Please stop it.

Ok, I feel better :)

I would love to say...your specialty is education, my specialty is nursing...please do NOT tell me the child has Fifth's disease because your great aunt's neighbor's neice's cousin had it. IT IS ECZEMA!

Please do not say the child probably did not take his ADD meds this morning, when the child is not dx with ADD/ADHD, he is simply acting up in your class, do not get mad when I suggest you ask the other teachers how THEY deal with his behavior.

Please do not get upset when I tell you your BP is really high (210/180) and you need to go to the hospital because if you die, I'm the last person that treated you and honestly you are not worth me losing my license over when your family sues me.

I really did not interupt your lunch to discuss a grade a child received onhis test, why are you interrupting my lunch because you have cramps and forgot to pack YOUR ADVIL.

should I continue or go back to work.....

Thanks

Those are great ones. It's a shame common sense is not more common than it actually is.

OMG my stomach hurts from laughing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with all the above!!!

As I sit at my desk beacuse trying to get to the breakroom is nearly impossible!!! One of the front desk people is great about getting a kids name, the other, not so much. She truly feels as though I should be accessible the entire time I am here...because....."I cannot triage"...... yet she will offer an opinion on most anything a parent says or kid does.....she cearly has all the answers and it the perfect parent mother etc.. (but that is a whole other rant)

Have a great day everyone!!

I guess I'm fortunate to be the only nurse for 11 campuses . . . I am not stuck at one school and can take a lunch when I'm going from one school to another or to my office at the D.O.

Sometimes I go home. Sometimes I head over to the hospital's salad bar (yes, it is that good). I also work hospice for this hospital and have an office there too.

Love reading these. Keep them coming.

I know Purple_Scrubs! Why is this always a nurse thing? I mean, would you send a kid to,the counselor for a sore throat?
