What is your dream job?

Let me start by saying I LOVE my current gig. The hours are perfect, I work with great staff, I have a 15 minutes commute...

BUT, if I were to describe a job where I could be doing anything, I would love to be working out in the community doing home visits for moms with newborns. When I worked as a Nurse Practitioner, I specialized in newborns and all the new babies would come to me for their first pediatrician visit after being discharged from the hospital. I loved all of the teaching, reassuring the worried parents, catching issues before they became a problem, and of course, getting to snuggle with all those sweet babies.

Ideally I would love to find a program where I could use my Spanish and visit at-risk families with new babies. I haven't been able to find anything like this in my community. Like I said, I love what I am doing right now, but I would consider a change if something as I described was an option.

What about everyone else?

I don't want the pressure of maintaining my looks and figure.

Honestly, if money were no issue, I'd work at an ice cream parlor.

Fun post!! Honestly, I'm really not sure what I want to be "when I grow up!"

Nursing was never my first choice although it was in the back of my mind. I never thought I was smart enough or capable. I come from a household where my parents did not go to college. They went straight from high school then off to the workforce, working real crap jobs and getting no where. No real emphasis on how important it is to go to college and better yourself. So for me during my last year of high school, I was looking for jobs instead of colleges to go to. I had no direction. It was all up to me.

I wanted to be a kindergarten teacher. Love working with little ones. But in my area, it is very hard to find teaching jobs. So that is when nursing came to be. My whole reason for going into nursing school was to someday work in women's health. I absolutely love pregnancy, birth, postpartum, etc. That would be my dream job! If I didn't have a boatload of kids at home and felt I was capable, I would love to be a midwife. Maybe someday. I don't know.

I love school nursing but feel conflicted. I hate paperwork and documenting over stupid paper cuts. I hate the responsibility and liability. My last job in sub acute was during the night so I had a lot of paperwork to deal with there as well. I want to work in a hospital so I can get that nursing experience and critical thinking skills that the professors in nursing school always talked about. But, I do not want to work in a toxic environment.

And at the same time, I don't want to work at all. I want to stay home with my little ones. They still need their mommy and I hate that I can't even be home to nurse my youngest and instead had to pump in the closet at work! I'm so conflicted!!

This. I know someone who works for a restaurant in the resort town I live in and they have an amazing wine list. This person's job is to literally travel the world trying different wines. Sign me up!

It's funny because I am obsessed with ice cream and I went for ice cream with some friends and all their kids and noticed one of them got a cookie and no ice cream. She told me she had worked in a scoop shop one Summer and are her weight in free ice cream and got totally turned of for life. She also said it was really gross how her arms and hands were always all sticky from leaning over and into the freezer trying to scoop it out. Funny, but I guess I can totally see that. I think I would like to just be an ice cream flavor tester like be on a panel when new flavors are created. THAT would be fun!!

Dog walker.

My dog walker and her husband are the coolest people ever. They were living in the city in a tiny apartment with two big dogs, no kids, and decided to make dog/pet sitting their full time jobs. They quit their jobs and moved to my town which is pretty affluent, North of Boston, LOTS of dog people. They bought a house with a huge back yard, got licensed and insured and started a full-time business. They make a LOT of money and love what they do. They run doggie playgroups twice a day out of their home. They pick up and drop off the dogs (my dog goes Friday mornings). They also do overnights, walks, house sitting, etc. They work year-round and rarely take any time off, but she swears she wouldn't change a thing. She says they make a lot more now than they did in "office jobs" and they are super happy. Might be worth thinking about, depending on your situation.

Honestly my dream job would be where I came from, the NICU BUT only as an 8 hour day shift with no weekends or holidays. :) I was a good 17 years away from that becoming a reality so here I am. I am fortunate to still be able to pick up those 8 hour day shifts as an agency nurse though so I kind of still have a toe in that world.

Non nursing dream job where it really didn't matter if I actually made a profit or not? Cute little book store owner like the one in You've Got Mail. :)

Specializes in Pediatrics, school nursing.

My nursing dream job would be to go back to school, get my MSN, and teach nursing school. My non-nursing dream job would be to open a Lilly Pulitzer signature store in my town and run that. Unfortunately, I don't see either of those things becoming a reality for many years. I really do like my job, and will probably retire from school nursing.
