Vent - June cannot get here soon enough

My school is going through some growing pains this year, and many of the staff including myself are not enjoying the changes. We have an extended day (8-4 instead of 8-3 for elementary), and an extended year (school is out mid-June instead of the first week of June). Admin has also put a whole host of new policies into place, including requiring staff and parents/visitors to sign in usign the same computer which is located in our (very tiny) main office. For teachers who get here early, they can sign in without issue. But for those of us who get here on time (7:40), there is a line of parents crowding the office as well as other staff members all trying to sign in on the same computer. Today I gave up and did not sign in. I dare them to say anything, lol. I've got actual students to take care of, I don't have time to stand around waiting to sign in to prove I was here on time.

There are a whole slew of other issues. Yesterday as I was leaving, there was a team of parents who wanted a sit down with the Principal. I have no idea the issue, but I could guess! There is just an air of frustration around here....staff, students, parents....everyone equally! I am just really ready for this year to be over. I admit I may have a bit of "short-timers syndrome", because as much as I love this school I will not be returning because the schedule will be the same extended day/year, and I just cannot do it another year. I am hoping to take a hiatus from School Nursing all together for a few years and be a SAH foster mom, or possible work weekends somewhere. As much as I LOVE the holiday season, COME ON JUNE 18!!!!!!!

Whew, OK. Vent effective. I feel better :)

Wow! Your frustration is justified. It sounds like things aren't running as smoothly as they could be. What was the reason for the longer day and school year?

Seems to me that they could probably come up with a better way of doing sign in.

Keep smiling - winter break is just around the corner!

The extended schedule has to do with a grant that is supposed to improve test scores. A bunch of baloney if you ask me. The kids are tired, the teachers are tired, everyone is cranky...not helpful in the least IMO! I'm interested to see if there actually is an imporvement in scores. Maybe they will abandon the schedule changes if not, but I doubt it.

I don't know if the extension is just a grant as I heard that some major schools in Texas are doing the same. I don't know what it is going on but know the teachers and staff look forward to summers as an perk to stay in the field. Also I don't know about leaving without getting a strong job replacement as I just read a long post about experienced RNs have difficulty finding jobs in this recession market. I think most schools are going through depression and low morale with layoffs, new testings, new rules, unsucessful school bonds and taxes not being passed and just overall tightening of budgets and resources. Good Luck to whatever you decide to do!
