Do any of you have any experience with these? I do not have a student with one of these but there is talk that we may soon be getting one. It is being used for treatment of seizure disorder, in combination with Versed. There are many questions surrounding this situation and I'm just wondering if any of you have any experience with this. From the little I have learned, there is a magnet that must be used and that we will also have to administer the Versed (I have not been given the route for administration) I'm not even sure that either is something that should be handled in a school setting. Thoughts or experiences?

I do private duty nursing in pediatrics. Many of my clients are school aged. One has a VNS. Different sedative. 'Magnet' similar to one used for pacemaker check but activates unit to stop seizure rather than stop unit to check heart baseline.

Very specific action plan. Neuro offered staff training.

I had a student with a VNS when I started school nursing. He wore the magnet like a watch and when he went into a seizure we had it written into the plan where exactly to hold the magnet and how long exactly to hold it (i don't really remember the details - it was about 9 years ago). There were several times he forgot his magnet and it was a huge deal because i worked in a special ed school and this student came from a really far distance. I think we were able to get an extra magnet that we kept in his backpack at all times in case he forgot it.

The Versed I am not as familiar with- most of my kids get rx'd diastat - but i am interested in learning more about it, especially if it's something i might start seeing more of. a quick search brought up the term intranasal.... how interesting.

That's exactly what I came up with too, Flare! I'm trying to track down guidelines now for my state, which is proving to be almost impossible!

Does you state dept of public instruction have a school nurse consultant? That's my go-to in this kind of situations. Please let us all know how this shakes out.

I work in a school for medically fragile children. We have at least 3 students that use them. There are several youtube videos that are very good. Contact the company they will send training dvd. I just received. A new one it is good, will use for staff development. I have never heard of using versed. Most of the time it is the diastat, you can also get a training dvd for diastat administration, the youtube video is good.
