SCHOOL NURSES HIRED BY THE SCHOOL SYSTEMS or SUBCONTRACTED BY OUTSIDE AGENCIES-WHAT DO YOU THINK?
This is a real problem. In Ohio a person can go to college and obtain a BSN and by taking a few more courses, one can get become a certified school nurse through the Dept Of Education. I am all for this! I started out as a health teacher and went back to college and obtained my BSN.
Here is where the problems started! When I started to apply for the school nurse job, I discovered that some school districts in Ohio did not hire a school nurse. THey contracted the position out to the local health departments for a cheaper rate! Now the school system does not have to give the nurses the school benifits (ie all summer off, christmas vacation etc.) Furthermore the public health nurses need NOT have the school nurse certificate!
I was wondering if any other nurses have witnessed this same problem that I fell into? It is indeed a shame that some nurese went back to school olny to educate themselves out of a school nurse carreer as the positions go to the "lowest bidder".
