Just have the ice packs and eye drops ready to go and you will be great!

Most of the littles dont want to miss the excitement so it should just be the bumps and bruises!

Don't let ice packs leave the office. Snowflake will not want to miss out on the fun of field day (and the awe of the other students who admire their ice pack) and will quickly ask to return to the festivities

If you can, place ice cubes in baggies and put them in a cooler to keep frozen so that the staff can just grab them and let the littles run back to play. This way you don't loose any ice packs.

But yeah field day is 2 days for me next week... I have heard good stories (basically nothing happening) to horror stories (children passing out, ambulance called) from the previous years.

I actually got this idea from this forum a couple years ago...maybe it was from you kidz. The difference in injury complaints by not allowing the kids to leave with an ice pack is incredible! Some of those guys would carry their "immunity idol" all day; many hours after is wasn't cool anymore - and they would NEVER feel better!

Field day is today for me! Thanks for the tip on the ice packs. I never let them "take a rest" in my office because of missed class time but today I think if they are "injured" enough to come see me they might need a 15 min cool down in my office or they are well enough to go back at it. ;)

Someone (maybe here or on the NASN forum) wrote that they soak several layers of paper toweling and freeze. Instant five minute "ice pack" that is disposable and even biodegradable!!

Elementary nurses - may the odds be ever in your favor!

I honestly don't remember if it was my own brainchild or if I got the idea from someone here! In any case, we all help each other out!

Soooooooo glad I don't have field day.

I do, however, have the shuttle run right now, and sports alllll year long.

Good luck to all elementary school nurses.

Ours was yesterday & thankfully, no casualties.

BUT!!! Just before, like literally minutes, before we started a kiddo fell off the monkey bars and broke his arm. He'll need surgery. Luckily, mom was here to help with FD & I got him splinted up & out the door in 10-15 minutes. Poor kiddo is missing the cookout today but will be here for slushies and yearbook signing tomorrow. Sweetest kid.
