New York School Nursing Requirements....

Specialties School

Published

Hello,

I recently started working as a school nurse in NYC for a middle school with 5th and 6th graders. The health records are a bit haphazard and the previous school nurse left before I could receive any new training. I am a new grad so I'm not quite sure of the health requirements and my responsibility in fulfilling those with the school. If anyone could direct me to some resources specific to NYC DOE or provide me with insight that would be great!

A few questions:

-How often do physicals need to be completed? Annually? Is this the same thing as the Child & Adolescent Health Examination form?

-What screenings are mandatory? (vision, hearing, scoliosis?)

-Can nurses administer OTC medication in the nurses office? Or do I also need a Medication Administration Form for that?

Any help would be very useful!

There is a fantastic school nurses forum under the "specialties" tab. They can really help you out! But I do know for sure that even OTC medications need to have a doctor's note or a parent has to give it. They can't even have it in their lockers, etc.

I am a school nurse in the South. Re-post your question in the School Nurse section under Specialties at the top of this page. :-) Or maybe a moderator can move the post for you.

Thanks for the info NurseOnAMotorcycly! Just moved the discussion to the School Nurse specialty :)

Congratulations! I am not familiar with NYC but, I work in NY not to far from NYC. I am also new to school nursing but, have been a nurse for 10 years in the hospital. This website helped me out a lot and is the go to for NY school nursing New York Statewide School Health Services Center. The information is user friendly! This School Nurse forum is also great! You are isolated from other nurse so it is good to get feedback and support from this online community. Good Luck!

I'm not sure about 5th and 6th graders. I would touch base with the nurse in the Elementary school, definitely access the site RNQueens posted above and yes, you can dispense meds as long as you have an order and parental permission.

I would also look at the NYSDOH site for immunization protocol.

Also, this site has been lovely as far as info and plain ol' fun nursey talk.

Hands down this is your best friend as a NY State School Nurse! Lots of information, make sure to join the email list to get updates and call anytime you need help! Linda and Gail are both really helpful. I've called on them several times when I needed clarification. Good Luck!

I agree the New York Statewide School Health Services Center is great! Very helpful! In addition they offer workshops annually that addresses updates and timely health concerns. The speakers are great and very informative. These workshops are held in different areas of the state each year. I've gone to quite a few and have learned a lot. Lastly, there is a program especially for new school nurses held near Syracuse, NY in a town called Shaneateles, at the Welch Allyn Institute, in August each year. It lasts a few days and from I hear it's great and new nurses learn so much. This wasn't available when I started school nursing... wish it was.

NASN (National Association of School Nurses) has a chapter in each state. You can look on their website for the link.

Looks like under the Education banner, there is a school nurse orientation coming up this summer.
